Videotutorial provider CG Cookie have spun off a Blender-only service earlier this week: Blender Cookie. I talked to Wes Burke about this project.
The Blender Foundation have received sponsorship to hire a full-time Blender developer for 9 months to work on Blender 2.5. If the project goes well, they will pay for another period to work on other Blender projects. Ton just announced that Matt Ebb (Blender coding/animation guru) has agreed to fill the position. The sponsoring party remains undisclosed ("but it's not Steve Jobs, don't worry!").
Virgilio Vasconcelos has recently compared the render speed of the current version of Blender (2.49) with the latest 2.5 build (svn revision 23930). The render optimizations are thanks to Jaguarandi and his Google summer of code 2009 project. The results are very impressive!
Blender 2.50 will contain a materials library 'out of the box'! That's a very nice feature if you ask me. A call for materials has been posted on the forums.

1) 2.5 project issues
- Martin mentioned a keymap design conflict that has to be handled, and suggests a solution for how to combine 'tweaks' (drag mouse) and clicks consistantly.
- Dalai prefers to see more advanced support being added for python script dependencies, like executing a script on changing a variable in the UI. Issue is that this requires an updated dependency graph system, which is not in the first release specs yet. Ton suggests to at least put it on the 2.5 beta2 list, maybe beta1?
