Creating a 2.5D Image in Blender

Beac shares an interesting technique to massively speed up rendering on a complex scene. He creates a depth map and then uses it to displace a subdivided plane. After reprojecting the render onto the plane, you can 'wiggle' it around to see get a (limited) sense of depth. He also applies this technique in Davinci Resolve.

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.
