Living Lava – Procedural Abstract Animation

I have been working on some rather large projects recently, and was starting to get burnt out. So a couple of days ago I decided just to make something, anything really. See where creativity took me.

This artwork was made using complex procedural deformations and a completely procedural shader. Made entirely in Blender 2.76b and rendered in the powerful Cycles render engine.

The mesh is deformed using procedural methods, however a mesh this complex required a lot of data, so there is a total of 5,000,000 vertices (yes, that is five million). Using the revolutionary pointiness feature in Cycles, I was able to apply a different “cold” material to the outer parts of the mesh, and a “hot” melted inner core.
