Sculpting a Tribal Totem

5

Gleb Alexandrov is on a roll! After he just posted '9 ways to destroy things', he released 'Sculpting a Tribal Totem' on Blender Cookie.

In this video Gleb Alexandrov employs a unique approach to shaping a carved, wooden totem. Watch how he uses a simple greyscale texture on a basic tear-drop mesh to achieve the majority of the totem’s form. Then a quick remeshing and it’s time to polish the off the sculpture’s details. A really cool workflow you don’t want to miss!

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. the topic of sculpting in blender is a really important one. admittedly I am terrible at sculpting weathered rock. (and surprisingly even worse in ZBrush) and I always thought of transferring 2D concept art into a 3D sculpt as a long drawn out process (no pun intended) and this video kills two birds with one stone.
Thanks Gleb!, your tutorials definitely introduce useful techniques in blender that we rarely would find anywhere else.
