Guillaume Gris won last weekend's contest with his image 'Exposed Basement'. He selected "Colorful Nature" as the theme for our next contest!
Guillaume says:
Well, it was more difficult than I though to decide on a theme. By looking at all the previous contests I though there was a lack of greenery. But it would be shame to reduce nature to green stuff so here is the topic I choose : "Colorful nature".
Post your work below (attach an image), and vote for your winner. The winner will get a post on monday, and will get to pick next weekend's contest theme. Have fun!

Sorry, this is my first contest. Any rules for the contest like with Blender Guru contests?
Not a whole like of rules. Just a general weekend challenge. Someone can correct me here if I'm wrong anywhere, but I think the general rules is just to create something that represents or fits the theme's description somehow. There's no real rules for how you do it.
You can be creative, as long as it resonates the theme somehow. Keep it sensible, of course (nothing offensive or explicit). There isn't an explicit time limit, I don't think, except that it has to be done sometime this weekend.
Again, if someone sees an error, someone correct me, but this seems to be the general "rules" since the first one I've seen.
Hey Brian,
that's correct, other than having the image (or video!) ready on Monday there are no rules. Offensive or explicit comments are never allowed here so I don't see that as an extra rule ;-)
Thanks for stepping in!
Bart
At least it should had something to do with Blender :) haha
Wow its morning but pheew i finished my entry :) 5 hours nonstop.
Hope you like it.
This is amazing.
Cool topic, here's mine:
My Entry
Looking cool...
WOW! I'm officially blown away by the detailing on the foliage! Well Done!
My Entry for Competition
can , we post more than one image
I am so ready for those Cycles volumetrics...
wow
That's beautiful.. but what is it?
Its loosely based on a bunch of google images I found of coral. I think I may have combined a few of them in my head to get this...
Really detail close_up Eric. Congratulations
Entry...im learning so critics are welcome :-)
Here is my entry. Enjoy! And good luck to the other entrants!

I remade the scene from the image above (The Other Day in the Forest, by Martin Lubich). Rendering is in normal Blender and not cycles. Hope you like it. Please make a tutorial on making the snail's shell, it took me 3 hours to make the shell and is still not perfect.

Here is my entry. Didn`t had much time this weekend, so I made a simple image. Some problems with the water texture I couldn`t fix and the rocks in background could have a little more detail, but the high subdiv for the displacement is killing my rendertime, so I decided to live with that. Post was done in Photoshop.
Still a wonderful view despite your misgivings! :) The only problem I really noticed was the shiny looking sand... wouldn't even wet sand appear rough? It could also be the sharp contrast between dark sand and light sand leaving me with this impression. This is still a beautiful scene nonetheless.
I think I know what you're talking about, but it didn't stand out too much to me until you mentioned it. I think the situation of wet sand's look would depend on how much water is with the sand.
Some instances of wet sand have stronger specularity because there's more water in and on top of it:
[Real photos ahead--no, these aren't genius works of photorealism from me!]

Other instances of wet sand have a matte look to them because there's less water in and on top of it:

In any case, it seems to me there's often times a bit of a trailing off between the wet and dry parts, a gradient from driest from the ocean to wettest towards the ocean, where the shiniest parts are where the waters just washed over while the more matte parts are where the waters are drying.
Though, I see that it varies as well, because the fresh seawater's always overlapping over dryer parts, and so you get some overlapping gradients. Keeping this in mind might help the image look more convincing.
An example of a bit of a gradient between wet and dry: https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-sKq3QvesZ8A/TYakkQ_RTNI/AAAAAAAADEI/XUghEuqZzos/s1600/nice%2Bpatterns%2Bin%2Bsand%2Bat%2BGoose%2BRocks%2BBeach%252C%2BJ%252C%2Blight4sm.jpg
...If my two cents were welcomed here.
Of course your opinion is always welcomed! It is right that a few more gray levels would have helped to make the transition between the dry and wet areas more believable. Btw. nice images, that point in the right direction. With a little more time this image could have looked different. I saw a nice Tutorial at 3d total: http://www.3dtotal.com/index_tutorial_detailed.php?roPos=1&catDisplay=1&id=1058 Thanks for taking the time! And thanks for your interests, that is what makes a competition worth to participate.
I have created my nature Underwater world image with Blender render made with Blender 2.68
Sorry for bad english I have translated with google.
The blue snail is about to do something, that maybe, he will regret it. Done entirely in Blender. I hope you like it.
Saludos
Sorry. When i was post the Blue Snail, was published with the duplicate image, and I can not edit. Sorry... And my name says "guest"...
I made this for the weekend challenge on BlenderArtists, but it suits the theme here too so why not ;)
This was more of an experiment with strand and volume rendering, but I thought I'd throw this up here.
Actually I didn't plan to participate this week due to time issues. But then I changed my mind and put this together in a few hours inbetween :). Everything is made from scratch. Hope you guys like it :).
Nice Bird :) but take care my gekko could eat it hehe
Thank you! :) As long as it stays off of that raspberry, that's mine! :) I Really like your Gecko too btw. Looks like you might go for another win!
Nah i will not be the winner of this. Thats also not important. My favorite one is the picture of Vincent Holzborn. Maybe thats cause im ready for holidays. Again! ;)
By the way all other pictures are awesome too! Its cool how different all pieces are.
I totally agree. There really is a lot of awesome artwork in here! And also, it looks like more and more people contributes to these competitions. :)
Sunset Run
Only two or three hours for managing that. Blender internal and a little bit of compositing.
hope you ll enjoy it.
This is really beautiful. I really enjoy the style.
thank you Eric. I'm glad that you like it.
I didn't have time to make a speed effect on it but hopefully the posing is sugestive.

I like it. Really pleasing on the eyes. A lot of submissions (including mine) try to go for detail and/or realism.
thanks. In my point of view, it's better to bet on onirisme than in photorealisme. But of course it's my point of view. The problem with realistic rendering is that it's difficult to rip off the human eye without a lot of work and rendering time.
First time submisson. Far from perfect, but I'm trying to learn that getting something done is more important than getting it perfect.
Also Not really far from perfect! I like it a lot really creative!
Here is my entry. I hope you like it.
Very good! I love the vibrating colors.
My attempt...
Very nice, love the details on the butterfy and the petals of the rose!
Thank you for the compliments.
Aaaah I accidentally voted on myself. I didn't want to do that.
Very nice, love the details on the butterfy (smetterling!), and the petals of the rose!
It would be amazing if all of the images are uploaded with the blend file (if it can be shared). I can learn so much from you all masters. My 'please consider' list is getting longer, so rewriting as below
Please consider;
1. making micro tutorials (5-10 mins) for stuff which you feel was interesting to model.
2. having weekend contest for animations like tiny movies 10-30 sec long.
3. sharing textures used in these contest images.
we can make a repository of these. Thanks. Vijay
