David Tejero demonstrates some rigs he created at the IHMAN 3D School. I don't know why, but I always enjoy watching this kind of video. Check out David's other work on his Google+ page.

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

Can anyone point me to a good tutorial; I can make a nice mesh, add an armature and rig the armature to the mesh with angle constraints, weight painting etc. Not sure how to proceed to this kind of rig from there. I keep falling over at things like floor definition and best practices on IK etc. Would like to find a step-by-step.
Try making Tim Burton from start to finish by David Ward. I found this tutorial very helpful. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hZ2ob8F3sJQ
Great suggestion!
