blender_logo_shinyEveryone's busy with bug fixing the upcoming 2.69 release (also see this post on how to report bugs), and the Google Summer of Code has been finished.

Thomas Dinges writes:

Here the meeting notes for the developer meeting in #blendercoders, irc.freenode.net.

1) Upcoming 2.69 release

  • We will add another week for bug fixing and will evaluate the status next sunday again. The Bug tracker is at 127 open reports at the moment.
  • Call for release notes. Every developer who added new features and did changes, should document them in the release logs.

2) Current projects

  • For 2.70 we will check on updating some libraries, like FFMPEG, OSL...

3) GSoC

  • GSoC 2013 is over, the students got their results via mail. Public announcement will be done by Google on Tuesday.
  • Students who passed need to upload their code samples to Melange.
  • For Blender 2.7x it would be nice to get some of the results into trunk.
  • Students and mentors, please communicate with each other and check if your work is ready for review/merge. If mentors don't have time for review, Blender Institute devs can help.

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

Blender mustt be the fastest-moving piece of CG software around. Though it seems some people are not so keen on that. :)

    • I think that we don't need to worry about them :)
Everything is changing... so the time will come. Those who didn't believed in Blender's power and potentials will come here and maybe will stick to Blender and it's community.

  2. First at all. Sorry about my grammar. I'm not native speaker.

I havn't read all the thread because i'm bored a little bit about this. I think it's like: Jever or Becks! Everyone has his own taste.

But I just want to say some things:

    Blender UI issn't perfect - that's correct.
It's like some kinde of organism growing up.

Blenders intention is a way to solve things in a way i can't realy describe. At least in my oppinion. I switched over from Lightwave, tried 3dsmax, stopped at Cinema 4d. noticed, that if i wanted to create 3d-models i had to switch over to a software wich is not restricted to a licence. Sometimes i hate Blender because it can be complicated. It is but ... it is not. It is a software and you get used to and you're doing your way (like Frank Sinatra ;) )

As far as i can say. everyone has a choice. Look for your Weapon of choice. And all in all, I can remember a post about getting an pro. It doesn't matter which software yr used to. it depends on the basics. every big firm writes it own scripts, addons or what ever. you have to know the basics and you have to learn the way "to do it"!! I had my fight against 3ds-guys. I had my fight against Maya-guys. I had my fight against Cinema-Guys! A colleague once said to me: "when i see you modeling i get sick, because your. damn fast and i don't understand what your doing". I just did it my (the blender)way. It is within all of us. We have our way. We can work togehter. and every modeling-tool has it's pro and it's cons.
It's a good way to say that there are lacks. but maybe Ton an the Foundation is goin' their way. And at least i caught me once, wondering why Blender is the only Software i know that works like: g is for grab. r is for rotate and s if scale. just simple and everything else you will learn. Like If you want to change something. Grab it! Rotate it. Scale it. It is in your! hands.

  3. well said , that's exactly the point or point's with blender, everybody's free to do it thier own way.and that's what makes it a very good solution for a wide variety of animation task's . It aint perfect but nothing's perfect.

  4. please please please reactor particle's . was just watching an old grass tut on blender guru and noticed the setting , started remembering how much easier that sort of option can help with particle systems. could've use it about a month ago . :)
