Blender game: Fear Of The Dark

22

Fear Of The Dark is a game design project with very good looking concept art. It uses Blender for 3D modeling.

Hi,

We (a team of 16 people) are working on a blender game called Fear Of The Dark.

Everything is made in blender (modeling, texturing, rigging, animating) but the game is going to be put together in an external program. I work on FOTD as an prop modeler/animator and our expedition seems to be taking shape.

I am also working hard to finish the trailer ASAP - the trailer is actually going to be an intro to the game and in a way it will show what happened.

This is a short game description:

The main character John was coming home from work when the country was attacked by shadow creatures. He lost his son and wife, on the verge of killing himself he discovered that there is a way to get his family back. Now that everyone is dead the journey isn't going to be so easy. Good luck!

  1. @Aldi : Before anyone else jump on the bandwagon, I guess if they want to be multi-platform they will make it run on Unity or something similar. It does not have to be in quote as if it was shameful. Blender can be part of a workflow. It does not have to be the be-all-end-all software to rule them all.

To get back to the topic, the concept art is indeed gorgeous and I hope to have news soon (on Steam? maybe?).

gorgeous concept art and good luck to you all am sure if you get to the end it will be something special.

  3. I hope they consider using Ogre3D, it is a great option these days for developing games.
Only downside is that it is not a ready to use game engine.
It is good that we are developing our own that will be available for public in the future!

  4. > Cool! But why use ‘external program’? Why not use BGE?

If they did, you could demand to get their source code.

  5. ThY is awesome! Blender shouldn't try to be everything, as aws stated. The girl to be the best Open Source 3SOME app is plenty good.

  6. The more effort devoted to improving the Blender-> Unity pipeline, the better! The BGE has always been of an impossible scope. I really enjoy using Blender and Unity for their respective strengths, though.

  7. Nice concept art -- high contrast, effective color scheme. I was impressed by the mountain village in the snow.

I agree with not using BGE -- there are much faster and more complete packages out there. BGE will eventually be a competitor, but I can't see it for a few years yet, at the current rate of production.

I think the story leaves me a little flat. For example, "now that everyone is dead" does not seem to be a strong description, and -- for me -- glosses over the emotions that could move me. Those emotions compel me to care for the character, and be interested in the game. If it's just going to be a Doom remake, then skip the prologue (does anyone remember the story behind Doom?), since it gives the wrong message, and let the graphics, action, level design, etc., carry the game.

This seems like a very impressive project, and there are seems to be people who are very dedicated working on it. Thanks for sharing your preview, Blendermonkey.

  9. While I am all for open source I cannot see BGE competing with Unity 3D which runs on all platforms
and is a very professional and polished mid range game engine.

  10. I enjoyed the paintings, but I should say I don't understand the link between the RPG landscapes
and the very cold FPS first image of the trailer (the 3d test on facebook), will the trailer be going outside ?

About the engine, it really look like a Unity publicity, there is a lot of good open-source professional alternative,
and the only way for open-source to become better is to use it, just try it, there is a visual tool similar to Unity
called Maratis, waiting for users and contributors. There is GameKit working specially for Blender, and Ogre.

  11. Maybe the story behind BGE is similar to the story of Blender itself: it needs to be used a lot first, then improved a lot, then noticed as a serious competitor. More serious stuff needs to be produced in it. Maybe another open game project, but more exciting (and commercial-looking) than Yo Frankie?

I've noticed more of these games made with blender popping up recently. In fact, I'm part of a group that is also planning a game using blender and Unity 3D.

  13. First of all: Concepts looks great :) But I did notice a few Maya screenshots under wall photos ???

@cekuhnen: Though Unity3D is a great product it currently doesn't really support Linux :(

  14. As mentioned Unity 3D does not support linux as a target or with the Unity 3 game development tool. This at least has made it difficult for me to use Unity 3 as it also does not run in a virtualized environment. Tried running it on Windows 7 in VirtualBox on my linux box and it was a no go. I have it running on a Mac Mini and it's usable but not great.

There are other cross-platform game engines that do support Linux but might not support iOS or Android or some consoles so I think it will be interesting to see what is chosen. Unigen (as a commercial game engine) looks like a good platform but is costly. Open-Sourcewise, Ogre3d, Crystalspace3d, Panda 3D, JmonkeyEngine, BGE, and Irrlicht all seem viable but all depends on what the games target market will be. I suppose the engines licensing also makes a difference.

I do see the appeal of Unity 3D and so whatever is chosen I wish the team all the best. Maybe they can get together with Wolfire games for the next Humble Bundle!
