Urban Etiquette

40

urban-etiquetteLiving dead pixels, winner of the Suzanne Animation Festival 2007, has created a series of short animations for Finnish television to make you think about 'urban etiquette'.

Jere, Pete & Jussi write:

Urban etiquette is a series of twenty pairs of five-second animation, created as channel idents for Channel Four Finland / Nelonen. The aim was to approach the subject of being polite and mindful towards others in an urban environment. It was conceived of and produced by living dead pixels -- Jere Virta, Jussi Saarelma and Peter Schulman. The trio has worked with Blender for about two years now, their previous bigger project being short animation Night of the Living Dead Pixels, which won the best short film -category at Suzanne Awards 2007.

The main tool in the making of channel idents was Blender, though also After Effects and Photoshop were used. The sound design was handled by Renny Järvinen and Kimmo Saarelainen of Nelonen Media.

Urban etiquette originally consisted of 20 pairs, but two pairs were taken out after about a week of the initial launch, because some people chose to misunderstood them.

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. Very efficient and cool job ; all work very well in this very short time character voice acting ,congratz !
And some videos got really funny animations. ;)
I think those little videos should be played in all the schools.

  2. Cool to see the familiar local tv channel logo on something made with Blender. Also good to see that there are pro blender users in Finland too.

  3. Very nice. I love the characters, the animation, the production! Awesome work. You did a great job of getting your message across in a clear and entertaining way.

  4. Finnish etiquette has some interesting details

    - Public drinking and drunkenness is fine, but you should give empty bottles to bottle collectors.
    - Public peeing is fine, but not organizing porta potties for every one is not.

  5. the videos are good and also prove true for France
however I'd like to raise the point that the tips are just surface tips...
Subjectively, I would say that, it is because of the last generations's lack of caring about teaching again good manners to their children, that we "need" to publish things in the media about good behaviour. In older times, all the things that were in this video were normally taught by parents to their children. Now it's pretty much being lost and I am realising that I had the chance to be taught those tips / that respecting spirit, while some friends of my age don't think of those at all.
By the way, respect is survival and may give room for only cold relations if we don't look for more within the relations with others. The "republic"/state asks for respect of others through media (at least in France's schools), though everyone should do more than that, and more than that is love (=taking care with all our thought & actions) of others as self, not just respect them. Being respectful of people is a minimum !

Also, let me mention that the core of all those good tips are just love of God before all else and love of others as self (= the first+second Jewish/Christian commandments ; other religions end up with the same root tips/conclusions).

There are very serious messages from Heaven in this century to recall to us to practise those commandments (commandment = best root tips to be happy) in every action/thought in this life. See http://www.holylove.org/ . Take care. God bless you.

  6. I got:
    Bandwidth Limit Exceeded
The server is temporarily unable to service your request due to the site owner reaching his/her bandwidth limit. Please try again later.
which is basically the Slashdot effect. Did anyone coral cache (or some other hi-bandwidth site archive) this site? I will try to visit again maybe tomorrow.

  7. Whoops!

Bandwidth limit for October exceeded in less than two days.
Contacted our webhost asking for more, but I think we'll be down until Monday at least. Sorry folks! :)

  8. these are so darn funny :D...roflcopter
really great situtations every in an urban environment will know these scenes and can relate to...

  9. These are very funny animations, simple and carrying their message efficiently.
I like the timing and the shading/lighting is looking very good.

    @myselfhimself :

I understand your point, but please leave religion out of it. If respecting others is a "minimum", the let's do our best to have it. Loving everyone doesn't have any meaning if you are not educated about their needs. Instead, knowing that some behavior is dangerous or annoying to others lets one choose between being social or not, and even understanding why they can be punished. There are universal standards about it, and these ads show some of them.

On the opposite, no religion can be universal, by definition: believing in something is useless if you know it's true, and stupid if you know it's false. That's why faith can only be an opinion about things that one ignores if they are true or false. Therefore, this opinion cannot be universal, and your "maximum" can't be an ideal for others.

Since no religion is universal, there are a lot of different religions here, whether in France or in the net. And mentioning your particular faith in public places not intended for it can be very irritating for some people. Telling people that the "minimum" is to be polite and the "maximum" is in enforcing Christian/Jewish/Moslim/Pagan/Buddhist/Atheist/Hindu/Voodoo... is pure nonsense for people who don't share your beliefs. So it goes against the minimum of social peace that "étiquette" tries to enforce.

Therefore, religion is not for public advertising, education is. QED.

Je peux te le refaire en français si nécessaire. (I can do it in French if you need it).

    @others:
I felt I had to answer to this person. Please don't be annoyed by my monologue.

  10. @Eutrot
thank you very much for your comment on my comment.

Yes, let us do our minimum to respect others at least.
Loving is getting into this process of a) thinking about "how can I take care of people ?" which comprises also getting to know the needs of people around ; b) acting to fulfill those needs.
Indeed, for anyone to be helped in the process of loving ("being social"), it is good to be taught/discover what is good and bad behaviour as the videos do.
I agree that there are universal standards (although they vary slightly across cultures), but again I think that if those videos were about doing sustainable development/teaching they could have told about the very background of respect/good behaviour, which is "(trying) take care of self and others (and God if you like) applied in every action".

/*On the opposite, no religion can be universal, by definition: believing in something is useless if you know it's true, and stupid if you know it's false. Religions are not universal, but truth is universal and can be found when it is looked for thoroughly. Religions is a matter of people looking for truth and trying to live out of what they think truth is.
Out of the scope of religion, if ever we are actually able to find truth by common reflexion about what is the root of good behaviour, then the most simple and answer to we'd reach would be this love self and others (instead of several rules which are comprised in that latter).
Some people think that the existence of God is one part of truth. Because other people don't think so, that former person is called a believer. Now why don't we settled the case for good and discover if God actually exists ? (if we admit that truth can be found together).

/*Since no religion is universal, there are a lot of different religions here, whether in France or in the net. I did say that being polite is a minimum, but instead of speaking of a "maximum", I said that "the core of all those good tips are just love of God before all else and love of others as self". By "core" I mean, the exact thing to do.
As to my bracket after "(= the first+second Jewish/Christian commandments ; other religions end up with the same root tips/conclusions).", I put it to mean that it happens to correspond to principles found in religions.
Believe me, I don't want to promote religions but truth, because promoting truth is taking care of others. Although, if I happen to see that one part of truth is systematically and willingly hidden by people, I will try to speak it out loud.
When real truth is kept in mind and practised, then true and effective peace appears and stays. If my saying of that "core" "love others as self and God before all else" -tip does not make peace, then it's not true and should be said. Please give me feedback on that tip's application effects in life of or people you know, if those are overall bad, remove all my comments.

/*Therefore, religion is not for public advertising, education is. QED.*/
Education is taking care of people, and to take care of people implies being a little truthful, and giving them true things to learn. One feature of education though is that it keeps people inside limits during the time they learn/grow, for their own safety.
Religion gives truth as education does. It may give some wrong parts of the truth, but non-religious education does it too.
As to that http://www.holylove.org website I posted it not because it was religious and because people should believe in the religion, but because it seems to be the truth and please give me feedback if you don't think that its contents are the truth. The concept of "Holy Love" corresponds that core tip I gave, this is why I gave that website's URL.
I don't care about religions except for the fact they may help me find further and stick to/live out of the full truth.

All in all, let us look for the truth together and we will find it. I see very well in projects that working in teams gives better solutions to problems than alone. People don't work (and don't work together) to find and achieve the truth (and I am myself part of that non-work), then that's maybe why we keep speaking about religions and believing in things today, while should all have found and seen clearly what the truth is in every aspect.

All in all, I did not mean to hurt anyone. And if I have shocked people, I apologize. However if overall what I am saying is the truth, then I'm like that real friend who tells the truth upfront so that things change. In France, we say that pretending to be a friend to someone and not saying to him/her what he/she is doing wrong, is not being a real friend. To wrap things up, those small clips about better behaviour were good, and I just pointed out one core tip that helps living what those clips teach and much much more.

It's like in maths, you may very well learn by heart the the derivatives of functions y=x^1, y=x^2. But if you know the formula for derivating y=x^n, you're much more efficient and your spirit is less filled by the way.

    Willing to take care,
    Best regards,
    Jonathan

  11. Those clips are very informative. It's REALLY ANNOYING when people in the bus/train are playing music with the cell-phone. It's just really rude ! Thanfully there's a clip about this :D

  12. I hope the law on sound making devices is going to pass the EU, so that these devices can't go above 80 dB unles you want to damage your ears.
Also hope that respect for others is going up more, and that these contribute to that.

  13. I showed these around to my parents, relatives and friends of different age, sex, religious and political orientation.
Everyone enjoyed, understood and could relate to them in some form so they prove to be very agreeable to various kind of people, in intention and artistic expression aswell!

These educational or public purpose informational videos should get their own separate category on blendernation, since they'll work great for blender promotion in general.
If there already isnt such section i'd propose these ones and the 'bob and brenda' series for such a category!
