Fan movie: Team Fortress 2 - Meet the Pyro [violence]

23

Anton Victor S. Espelita [avemagnadude]writes:

My brother and I modeled and animated the characters and environments in blender. We used some of the official Meet the videos and combined it with our own - about 70% is done by us. We also created some of the textures in blender but mostly used the textures from the game itself.

We based our idea on Valve's popular official "Meet the" series promoting the game.

The project took about 3 months because we work only on weekends due to school. :P

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. wow... even though you were abled to export all models/textures/bones/etc the story is very good and very near the "meet the" style of valve!

  2. To be honest, I don't see a much of your work here? Seems to be mix of Valve's videos, not much more...
Even if it's mixed well, does it belong to news on Blender.org ?

(no offence, please, I'm just trying to express my opinion)

  3. Although they mixed quite some content from the original videos (I am a TF2 fan), the pieces they made themselves are very near professional quality. It shows that Blender can reach a same level of quality as the real stuff. I think that is what this website tries to show. Admittedly it might confuse people, since large parts were not made using Blender, so if you don't know what's real or fake, it is hard to judge.

@melon: I think it's up to bart what does and doesnt make news...

Most people cant find the commitment to start and finish of such a production so i'm impressed!

  5. Loved it. It would have been nice if all the footage had been your work, but you guys do have school. Loved the end with the engineer. My favorite part.

  6. Wow, I'm impressed. I had expected something...well, bad. This was a refreshingly good "Meet the ..." mock-up. Keep up the good work and Valve will beg to hire you in no time. :D

  7. The credit should be a bit clearer on this, Id say 70% a pretty generous stretch
That aside its nicely cut together, and the stuff they did was quite nice.

For the sake of honesty it should be clear what they did though. which on the scale of the whole piece was very little.

the models could need some work, but great work so far, as already said, it's very close to "meet the" - series of Valve.

  9. Guys, if you've watched all of the "Meet The" videos and the WiP you'll understand what has been done here. The fact that their work blends so well with the original is impressive. There are quirks to it but unless you actually studied the footage you should not pass judgment so quickly.

And for the record, if you're upset about this being featured, be upset with me since I sent this to Bart and arranged the correspondence... I did so with the hopes that mainstream gamers would be made more aware of Blender and possibly even Valve... think about the magnitude of that before you bash this effort.

  10. I think they should do a second one, they almost nailed it, but shadows and glows felt a bit wrong on their scenes, like the one in the end.

  11. you guys, are perfect. But, what I dont get is that while you can do such perfect work, why did you need to combine another work with yours ? For you did not present only your work, your talent can not be seen clearly. I hope to see a work of just yours. Good Luck, you can do better.

  12. Weird timing... I was thinking just before I sat down to check BN about how I was never able to get into TF2 because there's no single-player mode. And behold... an excellent TF2 video made with Blender. I've only played the game once or twice, and I hadn't thought about it for quite a few months. When I did, it showed up on my homepage. Spooky.

  13. Yeah, sorry to say...but this one is a major rip off rather than a fan movie, sure, the guy made some scenes, and kudos for that work, but still....WAAAAAY too much footage taken from valve and edited into the movie.

Shouldn't be a headline in here, the credibility just dropped a bit now...
