Visit the Meetup Blender page to see local meetup initiatives. Here's how it works:
- You indicate you're interested in meeting people in your town or area (enter your town name in the search box on the top-right if Meetup doesn't get it right). You don't have to actually plan a meetup to do so.
- Others can join your group and suggest a location or a date for a meetup. Once you join a group you'll receive updates by email so you'll know what's going on.
- Once an actual meetup is planned, you can 'RSVP' for it so the organiser knows how many people to expect.
There are no rules for Blender usergroups - sometimes people just want to hang out, while other groups try to have a more formal programme in place with workshops and such. It's all up to you!

I'm thinking about starting up some blender meetings in wellington new zealand in the school holidays, will perhaps set up a page when I get my new schedules :)
Will have to see if I can get some of my Weta mates to come along and offer some critiques and advice, I shall lure them with beer :P
(Yes contrary to popular belief, the people at weta are occasionally allowed out for human contact) ;)
Hmm, this page is blank and at meetup.com: "The Meetup Group you're looking for doesn't exist."
