Farsthary, Blender's volumetrics guru, has taken on a new project: Voxel sculpting. Don't get too excited as he's still in the early stages of his work and there's no code available. Still, it's a nice insight into a possible new feature for Blender. For more information on Voxel Sculpting, see the explanation provided by 3D-Coat.
It's hard to miss the volumetrics work that Farsthary (Raul Fernandez Hernandez) and Broken (Matt Ebb) are working on. I contacted him and asked for an update on his work. Here's his report.
Farsthary (one of the guys bringing us Volumetrics) and Broken have been working behind the scenes to bring Photon Mapping to Blender, something which is a very exciting prospect for the future of Blender. Both of the coders have their own versions of the photon mapper in progress, but now they are joining forces to make this a reality sooner. The coding is still in the early stages, so don't expect anything amazing yet. But its the first of many steps to bring photon mapping to Blender.
We talked about Farsthary's volumetrics work before. He has now teamed up with Matt Ebb (of Elephants Dream and more recently ProMotion studios fame).

Community member Farsthary from Cuba (famous for his volumetrics and smoke work) found his home wrecked after the hurricane Gustav passed. He and his family are fine, but they're out of electricity and they have a lot of reconstruction work to do. You can support him by sending a donation. Bank account details are on his blog.
Update: I just tried to send some money, only to find out that Cuba is currently under embargo – you cannot send money there, at least from the Netherlands. The bank couldn't tell me if this affects other countries as well :-/
If you don`t want to wait for the implementation of the Wavelet Turbulence for Fluid Simulation algorithm, a developer is already working on something similar.
