I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. Would like to support, but this new cloud thing isn't that nice. Need to add all kind of details and can't use bitcoin :(

      • I'd really love to take part in the whole gooseberry thing... but I'm a
student -- we aren't even half way through the month and the fridge is
        already empty... (no joke)

take me as an intern, I'll move to amsterdam for one semester and help to push gooseberry to its limits, but it isn't possible for me to contribute with money.

        • In all honesty, it would be cool if the Blender Foundation did internships for college students. Granted, I am in the USA, so going to Amsterdam would be kinda out of the question, but still. :)

          • I think every student who is using blender dreams of taking part in such a big movie project. I'm studying in Germany, so the Netherlands are nearby.

    • Hey did you get any solution? I too get an Internal Server Error when I try to subscribe to the cloud. At first, I pledged 5 dollars and it showed up in "Pledges" for a day, later it vanished. And now I don't want to miss taking part in Gooseberry Project, please help me, because the clock is ticking.

  2. I don't think there are enough blender users with disposable incomes to make the cloud thing work at the funding level they are looking for, and the idea of a walled garden funding scheme makes many nervous.

    • I'm convinced there are - even on BlenderNation alone, I see 10,000 unique visitors *each day*. Comparable software costs hundreds of dollars, this is a small donation to make. And all the content on the cloud is Creative Commons - it's a completely free and open system. You just need to contribute to allow the makers to create that awesome content for you.

      • You can't run a credit check on those visitors. A lot of those 10,000 don't have sit down jobs, or disposable incomes. Life doesn't work out for many, and free software attracts a disproportionate amount of our kind.

        • Grfrog2, I ear you. I've been there, and probably for far to long. I understand that a lot of people out there don't have the extra money in there income to participate to the cloud. And it is ok. In the end, they will still benefit for this awesome project as well. It will make our beloved blender grow like never before. Any donations of any amount is very welcomed. And if you are friend with someone that is in the clouds, I'm sure you could bring some of your inputs to the project. And I'm sure that blender foundation and specially blendernation will keep every one, without any exception, informed on the development. Blender is for every one. And love in any way towards blender by anyone is always welcome. There is always other ways to contribute something to blender's family. There is also little compromises that one can make that we wouldn't think that would be enough to take part to the cloud, like cutting McD's for a week, cutting coffee, eating more healthy, etc. Mister Roosendaal, without even knowing it, brought excitement, laughter, joy, tears, etc to my life by bringing blender into my life. Giving me a chance to not only express myself trough his software, but to also show other people how much I appreciate them. I owe Ton quite a bit. So, any help, donation or love is always welcomed.

  3. To be honest, the publicity artwork for Gooseberry didn't inspire me very much, compared with Sintel for example. But after listening to Ton's interview video about Gooseberry, and realising just how much Blender has improved my technical illustrations at work, I signed up to Cloud anyway (with my own money, not the company's!).
Now that I have signed up, I don't actually care whether Gooseberry is something that I'll like or not. I'll still keep my 18 month subscription (at least) going if it means a lot more developers can be employed to make Blender even better.
Anyone who has recently had to investigate Adobe's prices for an 'upgrade' (i.e. a few minor tweaks, no major features, bugs unfixed) will soon realise what incredible value a Gooseberry subscription really is. Ton is an icon!
