I already did an animation of 3x3 Rubik's Cube so this time I decided to do a 2x2 Rubik's Cube. I learned that there are several different mechanisms for how they work. So I bought a new one and busted it open (literally). Here's the resulting animation. Enjoy!

Very interesting and instructional. If your mesh is set up to accommodate, you could set up a driver to control subdivisions based on distance from the camera to the object. This would make the sphere portions less obviously polygonal for up-close shots.
Or just use adaptive subdivisions?
Great video as usual Jared! Loved the 1x1-joke :)
That is an INCREDIBLY outdated mechanism that is literally only used by one company, Rubik’s, which is a very small portion of all companies that make cubes, such as Moyu, Qiyi, Gan, Shengshou, and many others. The newer mechanism is basically a 3x3 with hidden edges with 3 bandaged axes.
Also, the pyramid is called a pyraminx
