In an effort to bring industry standard tools to the free and open-source 3D computer graphics software Blender, a new add-on, Barnold, is currently in development which aims at bringing Solid Angle's unbiased, physically based, ray tracing 3D rendering application Arnold Render to Blender's tool-set.
Barnold aims at becoming a production ready add-on, allowing all features of Arnold to be used right within Blender's interface. The developer of this add-on, Tyler Furby, extends Ildar Nikolaev's work on the Barnold plugin from several years ago and is committed to ensuring this add-on supports all future versions of both Blender and Arnold in the years to come.
Barnold is currently in early beta and development is actively being worked on, if you would like to try it out yourself, you can download Barnold (beta) from GitHub.

It should have been called Bernard!
I see what you did there ;)
Hopefully the project doesn't get cancelled by Dolores.
It’s all apart of Ford’s plan...
Its a great news!
How much will it cost when fully released?
Free!
Wow!! Arnold costs a lot!
Is it only the connector? Or the full package?
You can get Arnold for $65/month or $615/year, which isn't that bad all things considered, pretty decently priced compared to some other render engines.
Thanks for the clarification.
Any chance you can bring B-Maxwell back to life?
I'll definitely take a look into that, I'm working on getting Barnold production ready and then a Google Cloud Zync plugin to allow cloud rendering in Blender, I'll definitely be sure to add Maxwell rendering for Blender to the list! Perhaps, Baxwell?
I noticed that you are taking over Ildar Nikolaev's work he did on Barnoald. N.Ildar developed a wonderful add-on for Maxwell Render called Bmaxwell. Fully integrated into Blender. It is on Sourceforge. But he stopped development when Maxwell went to v4. Since then, I have been using Cycles, which by the way is GREAT too. But I do miss using Maxwell Render as well. His last add-on worked with Blender 2.78a. I was a big supporter of the add-on and will continue to support the add-on's development.
Thanks,
Aaron
Depending on how drastically Maxwell changed their SDK, it might be relatively simple to update from Nikolaev’s previous build - I’ll check it out.
Here is the link to the Blenderartist page forum for Bmaxwell.

Thanks,
Aaron
Also, Nextlimit was very interested in working with N.Ildar and providing anything to him that he needed.
I don't understand. Arnold is OSL right? And Blender has OSL. So why need Arnold? Arnold shaders are compatible with Blende, right?
No, both are very different from each other. You may be able to write a converter, but the two are not compatible in any way. Also, each one is a completely different render engine, creating very different results in the final image.
A good example of this, render an interior scene with cycles - then again with Arnold, and you'll already see a major difference.
What about Blender 2.8 any idea when
It,ll be out?
I’m not sure when 2.8 will be released, since that’s up to the Blender development team, but you can bet Barnold will support it!
does barnold require you to own arnold too and just acts as a compatibility plugin, or is barnold to be a full free renderer for blender? thanks
You will need an Arnold license, as any other render engine would, but you can render for free with watermarks
Great news ! thanks for our effort :)
I would like to ask you, it will be a fully integrated rendered (like Octane for Blender) or there will be an exporter to standalone version, like Corona or Vray has ?
Thanks for your answer
Fully integrated, just like cycles or octane :) currently working on getting the IPR for the rendered view and live bucket tiles during renders/animation sequences.
I want to make some pun about Blender and the classic Arnold Schwarzenegger line "Git to the choppah!"...but nothing comes readily to mind.
Tyler Furby, you never cease to impress and amaze me!
They are not industry standard tool.
Solid Angle’s Arnold Renderer is rapidly becoming the standard in this industry...
Of course not, it is just rapidly integrated by Autodesk into theirs products.
Thay are hurrying up, doing it really rapidly, because they didn't made any kind of nice render engine for last 30 years, so they are failing there pretty much often, so they are interested to make you think like this)
They are not industry standard tool, until you will make them.
EVERYONE serious is using Arnold. Keep using whatever you use and let other people pass by...
Of course not. Arnold is used a lot by studios using Houdini and C4D as well. It *is* the industry standard, blender kiddie.
how to install this wonderful addon
Currently in the midst of rapid development for our scheduled Q3 release.
Great news. Will it also work on Macos with AMD GPUs?
Why would it when Arnold doesn't support AMD GPUs.
Not working at all
