Here are today's notes from the developer meeting in irc.freenode.net #blendercoders.
1) Blender 2.78 Release Candidate
- Wiki and download link.
- Tuesday we call for a second RC
- Blender.org release log, Marco Ardito is working on it
- For wiki release log: Azhar "fablefox" Mat Zin volunteered.
2) Other projects
- Blender Institute organizes 2.8 viewport sprints in September. More sprints: Cycles during conference, nodes/physics probably during conference, workflow/UI end november.
- Julian Eisel has custom manipulators code ready for reviewing. Code works in current master, but as agreed all new development will go the 2.8 branch(es).
The plan stays to keep 2.7x releases production stable (and compatible) whilst 2.8 is being built.

stoked for viewport stuff! i was watching some unreal 4 speed design videos and it made me realize how pokey it can feel working in blender's viewport sometimes.
i'm pretty excited about that myself.
when you said blender's viewport felt pokey did you just mean visual graphics wise or what?
started watching a few unreal 4 speed design vids after reading your comment. some awesome stuff there.
