Blender has won the 3D World CG 'Software Update' Award 2012. As far as I can tell, there's no prize attached to this other than the honor of being recognized by the industry.
About the award:
This award is open to any existing application that has received a sizeable update, introducing useful new features and new technologies to its user base, while maintaining stability and usability.
3D World includes a comment by Alex Telford, who writes:
So Blender has won the software update award? This comes as no surprise to me, as I am in constant awe at the updates that come in every week such as Cycles (GPU progressive renderer), BMesh (nGons), BSurfaces (retopology and curve-based construction), Voronoi Shatter (Dynamics destruction)... The list goes on. This is because Blender is one of those applications that is built by the community for the community: Blender is in a constant state of upgrade, so we never have to wait for a new version to come out to try the new features.

awesome news.
gartulations I thing if I compare price and performance all packages Blender is the Winner .big thx to all developers for they hard work
If you consider the price blender is the winner by 99 laps advantage on a 100 laps race :) it's so at ease far that there's not even competition. The only way any other software can match blender is if we totally ignore the price.
I'm just hobbies but still I fascinate how blender is ignored by cg society :) cause is free I guess but thats going to change one day
Blender rules!
great , a huge thanks to the blender community and our awesome developers , congratulation for every one :)
Congratulations !
Yeah no prize lol, but definitely awesome.
These were the nominees:
Blender 2.6 - The Blender Foundation
Cinema 4D R13 - Maxon
LightWave 11 - Newtek
Maya 2013 - Autodesk
Unity 3.5 - Unity 3D
Was definitely an honor being approached for an 'expert' opinion and render :P even though I've been doing 3D less than 2 years, and I am very proud of blender and the community :) as we all should be.
We have a reputation of being an awesome community so lets keep it up and good work everyone :D
I'm not up to date with what newtek, autodesk and maxon are doing in their studios. But I do wonder how unity would've fared if they had released unity 4.0. They're putting in a lot of new features for their upcoming release.
It could certainly have rivaled cycles just by it's cheer (is that correct spelling?) number of new features.
*sheer :)
Congratulations!... Lets keep it up :)
congrats Blender!!!
they probably didn't take into account the retro-compatibily aspect then...
Congrats, Blender! Any other result for this award would be fake.
Definitely I am very PLEASED by reading this ! Congratulations to Blender 3D !
That is one proud moment in CG history .
İ use blender in my office and i am the only one who uses it professionally(even though i use 3ds max also). Some of my friends have switched from XSI after autodesk swapped the xsı developers to Maya ;my friends are still adapting to blender. I work for a game company which is indie, but our game is very popular , since i have started i have seen the limitations of 3dsmax for both modelling and animaton.Limiting cloging our pipeline everyday. We have bought seperate software like motionbuilder... for mocap and animation, official releases and upgrades of 3dsmax 2009 2010 2011 2012; we have about 10 artist (including me ) which have to use 3ds max for production. That is 10 x $3.500 = $35.000 + yearly subscription of upgrades which i think costs $1.500 , so 1.500 x 3 = 4.500 + 35.000 = 39.500 its almost 40k.....
every day we get some kind of frustration about max in some way... while using blender people get amazed how easy some things are for blender....
Modo is doing OK
Cinema 4d i doing OK
3dsMAX is BULLSHIT
MAYA İs soso
Blender is OK
try these in a production pipeline and you will see what i mean...
Thanks for this. Quite interesting. My question to you, why do companies keep using Autodesk, XSI etc etc?? What is your opinion on that? and also, which things are way easier in blender? Do you have a blog? Thanks
It's the industry standard. Most people will continue to use something they know, even when they know it's subpar, purely because it's easier than learning a new piece of software. It's only when the scale tips so far against their favour that they'll make the switch to something better.
A well deserved award! The developers should be extremely pleased with the amount of hard work they been adding over the last year and advancing it to competitive levels. Hats off to those making Blender a viable professional tool!
Congratulations!!!!!!
Good ol Blender. Pretty amazing what's been added going from 2.4 to 2.5 and now 2.5 to 2.6 is a huge slew of lovely usefulness yet again. Can't wait to see what wonders 2.7 unfolds.
Great job developers, you chaps rock with a capital ROCK!
So glad I chose to learn Blender two years ago. Now it is an integral part of my work flow.
