I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. Cool amount of detail.
Maybe you could remove the strong highlighted tree in the background, as it captures a lot of focus of the image (away from the snake) or you could add a bit of light to better define the shell. But in generall the mood and the rim light setup is already cool.

    • I think that glowing tree adds additional realism and I like also that the snail wasn't that easy to spot (though it's the central part of the image you gotta look for it ;))

  2. I love the atmosphere of the pic and the detail on the branch, but when I look at the full-size image, I find that the snail itself is not realistic enough... the eye-stalks, the foot, the general sliminess, even the shell just don't feel right. Google Images could give you a better feel on how your snail should look....

  3. Really like the atmosphere of this pic. My only critique would be the snail doesn't stand out enough if that's what the focus should be on. (My personal taste) Perhaps it's suppose to not stand out too much? Hope we get to see more of your work in the future! It's really good!

Awesome! Here is almost nothing to criticize! Just one thing: +1 that 8-bit said about standing up the snail. I've looked to the tut. on blendercookie about how to compose great pictures and there the guy says about how to stand up the main character. That's really helpful!

  5. Hey really beautiful pic. I love the atmosphere like others have pointed out but I think there's not enough light in some parts. If I were you I'd try to add a light source on the bottom left, to add some more ambient lightning and possible a spotlight/ray on the snail. As others have pointed out the snail is not catching the eye. I love what you did with the vegetation though. The nature is perfect ;-). Great job man
