Tomorrow I'll publish an overview of the 10 most popular news items of 2011, but I'm also curious what your Blender highlight was: what was the feature, artwork, project or news this year that really made you go 'WOW!'? Be sure to include links!

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

My biggest Blender Highlight 2011 was, that i won a blenderguru competition.
2. Cycles
3. Camera tracking
Congratulations! What did you make?
Thanks. This one http://www.eisklotz.de/3d-projekte/blenderguru-x-mas-competition.html
Definitely the whole 2.61 release and start of the Mango project.
Yeah, 2.61 release and Mango project.
2.61, definitely
The starting of the "Brechts easter egg suprise" thread by Ton at BlenderArtists.org.
Sorry for asking here, but I can't open BlenderArtists.org site. Is there any problem with it? Is it off temporarily? Thanks.
21:23 cet, it works
Still, can't access the site. :( Best wishes to all!

But direct IP access is not allowed.
I work with :chrome.
Maybe add /forum/ to the url
Or http or www
I don't know.
Unfortunately, nope. Tried: chrome, IE, Opera, Ubuntu on my laptop, http, www, forum, everything. Must be something with my provider or what... :(
I loved 'Clocked in". Pure class.

THANKS DUDE
Its all good i think. Dynamic paint, camera tracking and cycles
1. New version with branches merged into the trunk
2. Cycles
3. The overall feel of program, looks and works really cool.
My biggest highlight was simply getting back into Blender. I hadn't worked with it for a few years so I basically was starting over.
Jonathan Williamson's book, Character Development in Blender 2.5. Because of it I successfully modeled a human character that actually looks human!http://cgcookie.com/blender/images/my-lia/
Helping out on a patch (export selected only for collada) which eventually made it into trunk (first time for me). And of course Cycles, congrats Brecht, you've really made and impact on the whole industry there :)
I had the opportunity to teach a 4 day class in Casper Wyoming, covering the basics of Blender and intermedidate topology of modeling . They were a great group of people with amazing enthusiasm and creativity!
I feel bad about it. For two years, it was hard to learn. And now it is becoming easy to start with.
Well... The best for me in 11 was developing of onion branch and restoring chromoly's addons as that kind of stuff is vital for me, considering that I work in production of well known game titles. Cant wait for 2.62 as onion branch will be implemented. Hope to see some improvements on modeling tools for HS pipeline. Cycles is great but it doesnt support normalmaps... Sculpt still not ready for production pipe. Excited about Mango project as well.
1. "Dynamic paint"
2. http://www.blendernation.com/2011/12/16/french-blender-happy-christmas/ <-- Just surprised :)
3. "Cycles"
4. Discovered how useful the video sequencer is (yes I know that's not new but I never used that before)
that french christmas video is brilliant, thank you for sharing that, I hadn't seen it. http://www.blendernation.com/2011/12/16/french-blender-happy-christmas/
yeyyy i came 3rd in blender guru competition.... hope next year will come with more challenges and more new projects
CryBlend - I've been waiting for that for years
Me accidentally overwriting my 2.49 install of blender and losing all my plugins I collected over the years (I don't make backups ). then trying to adapt to blender 2.5+ while missing all the plugins and old features (and IMO, better UI) I want that do not yet exist in 2.6x.
The realization of how BIG (for lack of a better word) Blender has gotten, and the realization of how BIG (for lack of a better word) Blender can and WILL get! ;)
Camera tracking and Cycles.
Cycles! Nothing beats cycles!
Attending Tosmi 2011, Working in tube, and closing 2 blender proyects (so far) for next year!!
first, using cycles in an official release, blender.org expanding its criteria for news headlines, and the short film Rosa
http://www.blendernation.com/2011/11/22/rosa/
1) Blender at the FMX conference, it was such a great feeling to present Blender there to professionals and students! :) http://dingto.org/?p=64
2) Cycles!
3) Great Blender conference in October.
1) Blender 2.61
I worked for a school and did an initiation to animation ( mainly pxilation ) and put everything the kid's (6 to 8 year's old) realised all together in Blender. Most of it wasn't 3D but it's the first time i'll earn money with blender !
Cycles, Blender GSoC branches, as well as generally learning more about Blender.
My biggest Blender Highlight of the year was switching from Max to Blender. and hopefully next years highlight will have something to do with Freestyle.
My biggest highlight was when I convinced my 3D modeling and lighting instructor that my Blender could do everything and more than her 3DSMax could
like scale a skinned character..
tomato and getting work using it
hmm... great question! Mine definitely include the finalization of my arduous, one-year-long NES Console project (
http://blenderartists.org/forum/showthread.php?227540), discovering Cycles (even if I don't use it much), starting to set up my tutorial website (coming sometime in 2012)... but overall, the biggest was definitely the NES project, learned a heck of a lot with it and I got some great feedback, it was a really awesome project and learning process. :D
Lookin' forward to 2012 though, 'cause I'm going to be trying out some new things (like the camera tracker, compositing, animation, car models, etc.)
Anyway, Happy New Year everyone! And a big thanks to all the devs and bloggers and Admins across the Blender network for all your hard work and general awesomeness!
1. Going to Siggraph and meeting the blender guys!
2. Cycles
3. Dynamic Paint
Realizing i could model to a certain level with the Little Bot Bunny modelling excersize on blender cookie. Also think that cycles was one of the best things to happen to Blender this year. I've been using Blender only for about a year, so this has been a banner year! :P :)
For me my Biggest Blender Highlights 2011 is switching form Autodesk Maya to Blender and I'm proud for doing this!!
Cycles. Hands down. Awesome.
My biggest, well that started about 6-7 years ago when I posted something in BA Forum about Blenders UI being not so user friendly AND today Blenders UI is much much better though still needs som polishing up.
Thanks for all your work.
Dear All,

2. Made a game, with the models made in Blender - http://www.anuragrana.com/play
3. Made a couple of space animations - example here :) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xPdZmkl9XzQ
Any ocomments ??
To all, please enjoy the new year, 2012 - and hope you have many many highlights,
Yours,
Anurag
EVEN IF ITS NOT DONE:BGE HARMONY PROJECT was a big WOW for me.
I care a lot about Game Engine, not render.
May I remind that here in Belgium, New Year starts one week later.
We need one week to recover from laughing at firework accidents in other countries.
2..61
My best Blender moment 2011 was when I was shown here on Blendernation.
http://www.blendernation.com/2011/07/13/video-our-new-world/ i was very proud of that. After that Cycles is the thing that exited me most.
2012 represents a 10 year journey for me with Blender that began in 2002. What was an arcane and mysterious process(digital fimlmaking) became possible. Ritalin allowed me to learn math and programming. Now I stand on the threshold of making a movie using Blender and the amazing style of my hero-Tex Avery!
