These are amazing. I'm really excited to see more and more by this guy.
For volumetric muzzle flashes, use the explosion setting on the cloud generator add on (looks a little more real). good tut though;)
Please make the images on the front page links, it's really annoying to click the image, and be brought to the png file instead of the post.
Heh, rule of thumb, the muzzle flash as the size of the gun.
Lemme just put my meter long muzzle flash on my AK-74, and we'll be set.
In response to your thank you: Thank YOU! These tutorials are absolutely brilliant. The Tomato branch (camera tracking) should be great for this effect.
so, time has come for blender to take a part in VFXworld...anyway it's insanely awesome, well done
Or make it really easy and just use blanks, so that way the gun actually cycles and ejects a casing. Also don't be fooled by hollywood, real rounds don't produce that much flare, movie blanks are made to add visual eye candy to a movie

Yea, Because it is cheap and legal to run around, shooting off blanks. Gun cycles and case ejects are also easy effects to re-create, but this is a muzzle flare tutorial so they were not covered.
Actually, if you follow Film Riot, you'll see that there are also gas powered guns that cycle and smoke that you just need to add muzzle flash and casings to. Most film isn't fast enough to catch the initial few frames of a casing ejection anyway. As for the size of the muzzle flash, Adam is correct. In fact, muzzle flash reduction is a major goal for most military firearms.
Nice tutorial! excellent job. Clean, clear, fast, accurate. Thank you!
Some awesome tutorials! I'm definitely looking forward to more!
Hi, Tom,
Thanks for this tutorial. It is several months old.Fortunately, I found it today.Small video footage captured from the tutorial to carry on tutorial steps.
After compositing part at the end my result was close to your result except your recorded smoke and glow in the footage added to my created glow. Can you provide video footage download link?
