Entoforms

5

Dolf Veenvliet (Macouno, of Sintel fame) is taking his Entoforms to the next level. In order to be able to invest the time required, he's launched a crowdfunding campaign:

This campaign will fund the creation, and exhibition of a series of limited issue, highly collectible, art pieces called Entoforms. They are artificial life, generated in the computer, printed in 3d, grown, and collected by macouno.

Dolf continues:

Since I finished work on Sintel I've been keeping busy with a lot of freelance jobs, teaching, lecturing, baking, oh and rebuilding GraphicAll.org with Pablo & Daniel. At the same time I've been developing something new, an art project that I'm really excited about! Perhaps you already saw a post here at Blendernation about my "Entoforms". Creatures grown with python, inside Blender. Well... It took 6 months, and the equivalent of a 300 page book in python scripting. But it's time for me to take it to the next level!

The brand new website is on-line! Here you can find a catalogue of all creatures. The latest news. Lots of videos, and links to the files with the creatures, hosted on blendswap.com. I will share all my python scripts there as they evolve to usable status as well.

Then there is the crowdfunding campaign that also started last friday! This will help me continue my work, and make more share-worthy scripts for the Blender Community. It is also an opportunity for you to get your hands on a collectible limited issue 3D printed art piece! Actually... for less than they will cost once they hit the galleries (but don't tell them about that!). You can even get your very own unique Entoform, based on your name! Join in if you can, and if not, then please consider tweeting about it, or leaving a message on facebook.

Spread the word!

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. Something I've been wondering about ever since I first heard of the Entoforms...will you be making the script you used to generate them available? They look pretty cool anyway and this project seems very interesting.

  2. Thanks folks... I'm getting lots of positive feedback, which is great! It's always scary to "put yourself out there".

CGEffex: Yes... I definitely will! I will publish them here: http://www.entoforms.com/scripts/ But all in good time.. currently the scripts really only work on my computer, with my blender version, in my blender files. I will try to make versions that might be useful to the community as well!

nullbot: That may be a while... but I'm about to start work on some new features which will, I hope, create somewhat more 'lifelike' creatures. I definitely want to play with automated motion as well!

Thanks again everyone, you're making this all very much worth my while, and then some!

It seems you're having lots of fun with your Entoforms (I was typing Entomorph.. why not?)..
Maybe some painting (like old miniatures) of the skins in a Avatar fluo style could make them rock even more!
    PS
    I want wings..
