Speed up for Freestyle

17

Alex optimized the code of Freestyle which brings significant speed improvements. In addition a selection of "Raycasting Algorithms" can be selected now as well with which the use can balance out speed vs. quality of the freestyle calculation.

  1. Yes, I have been using the last release which includes this speedup. The reduced time to render is a real plus and the Freestyle code within Blender is becoming really usable. Thumbs up!

  2. Is there a good up-to-date tutorial anywhere for using Freestyle? Didn't there used to be a Freestyle checkbox in the Render Layers tab?

  3. this is good news. glad someone is looking into optimization too. freestyle and bmesh are so underrated projects.

now i wish someone could implement this in game engine too.. tha would be totaly awesome

  4. I agree with abhifx here

the two projects are a great addition to blender.

Freestyle for rendering and BMesh speeding up Blender.
As far as I understand the current mesh code is why
Booleans in Blender are so slow.

  5. For me, I must admit, the speed up doesn't really seem to happen. Maybe because I use a specific python module (sketchy).

In any case, Freestyle really is an amazing addition to Blender. It allows me to present early or informal work, as a structural engineer, with a very satisfying style. A huge benefit to me, that is mainly thanks to TK. Let me take this opportunity to thank him and to commend the Freestyle builds to anyone who hasn't tried it. Make your materials Shadeless, turn on Freestyle, and enjoy the magic!

  6. no, the speedup... is more than substantial.... it's gigantic... you have to be using Culled Cumulative/Traditional viewmap creation.... you might be using the normal raycasting or one of those old options

this change made all the difference for me because the film i'm working on is heavy on freestuyle and i woulnd't have been able to complete it for may without this,

T.K. and the team are the best, thanks alex for the code update
