New Feature: Data Set Processing

30

'Data set processing' is about to change the way you can manipulate object date with nodes. Lukas Tönne [phonybone]is working on this new experimental feature. Check out this demo and remember to close your mouth while you're watching:

Lukas writes:

Introducing a new data processing system that can handle larger sets of elements from all kinds of context. Also showing how groups work with adaptable socket types.

For in-depth information on this new feature, check out Lukas's blogpost.

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. I tried to stop smiling during this, but thinking of the possibilities was just too much :D

    Awesome, utterly Awesome!

Thanks for giving Lukas's work some exposure, and thank you Lukas for this awesome work you're producing :)

  2. This is very powerful... I'm just thinking how nice would be to add some warping/noise based on procedural textures or even images! Controlling meshes from nodes is truly _awesome_!

  3. This is single most powerful new feature of 2.5X series i hope this will evolve to something more amazing..keep it up dude..can't wait to lay my hand on that:)

  4. This looks awesome! I think this could be compararble to some of the node based particle and mesh animations like in C4D... I can see a lot of motion graphics and artistic works coming out of this, as well as more math simulations.

  5. WOW!
I agree with the previous poster, this is probably one of the most important features in 2.5x to date :)
One day it could evolve to something similar to Houdini or Softimage ICE.
    Extremely cool Lukas! Bravo :)

  6. That's really cool. As a Houdini User I also thought of something like this. Really powerful.
With this whole "get position" - "set position" it really Looks like ICE. This is not a bad thing but as far as I have used ICE it seems limited to me in the way that you can not model with it procedually. In ICE you can not create vertices from nothing.
Blender has the nice design that you can create an empty geometry container. Combine this with Node based modeling tools you will get something really powerful.

So my advice is do not look at ICE alone but also take a look at Houdini for this.

    Keep up the amazing work!

  7. Really great! Hat off developper

.. BUT... Remember XSI ice was not use at the beginning because it didin't handle subframe sampling. It's a very important thing to check, can this great tool work with subframe?

  8. So when do you start work at the Blender institute? Dude this is an incredible testimony to your talents and genius. I look forward to the day that or if you decide to have this incorporated into blender.

Lately we have just seem so many amazing things from developers like you that I really think you guys are spoiling us. Not that I mind.

Please do have a look at the houdini nodal system as well as suggested before, I have used ice and trying my hand at houdini recently and it really is a powerful system.

Great work and thank you for sharing.

  9. IMHO Blender is jumping ahead of mainstream packages in leaps and bounds. Wow is all I can say. WOW wow wow.

Now all I need is a blender system that makes my coffee in the mornings... anyone interested in writing an interface for my kettle?

  10. So many amazing features coming ! I'm still stuck to 2.49b, and I fear that I will have a huge bunch of things to learn ! This node system is awesome ! Thank you !

  11. Ohh, very, very nice and powerful for the future. It looks like we can finally get even stuff like "particle age" based effects for particles one day! Thanks, Lucas!! This is really a big thing! So versatile.

  12. Definitely worth it, to "invest" in blender (mean PayPal). It's going to cause a serious headache for those 3000$ softwares out there. Keep up the good work!

  13. Hopefully they'll also add something similar to Maya's Hypershade, where you can mix and match any kind of node as long as the data type is similar (vectors to vectors, floats to floats, etc). I imagine rigging in Blender will become so much easier with this!
