Interview: James Neal, RedCartel

gecko_hotelroom-150x84James Neal from RedCartel talks about the use of Blender in their production pipeline and about the creation of their Gecko commercials.

James says:

In late 2006, I met Matt Ebb, who is an Australian guy passionate about open source 3d and Blender and has been heavily involved with the development of those tools. I was already exploring our studio's options for future toolsets and I was inspired by the software and his attitude, so I hired him to help build that pipeline for us. The first major piece we delivered using Blender was called ‘The Lighthouse', a short film for the Responsibility Project, during which the toolset really shined. The learning curve, under Matt's guidance, was not a big hurdle for our artists.

What's up with the new name?

RedCartel is a new name for a merger between ProMotion and another Sydney studio called Twitch. So effectively ProMotion is no more and Redcartel is our studio name.

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. Wow! i like the demos reels, especially the cave remind of my honeymoon.
One question I'm sure that blender is not the only 3d software use for these projects?

  2. Sure would love to get Matt to come and talk to our guys here (not far from where you grew up Matt) who are Max devotees (although there are a few blenderers amongst us) to convince them that Blender can run with the big boys now.
