Hongkiat.com recently posted a list of 60 websites that are hosting free 3D models. Go ahead and tap into this excellent resource!
From the Hongkiat article:
3D models represent a 3D object using a collection of points in 3D space, connected by various geometric entities. A free 3D model definitely can save your budget and deadline. On average, a modeler saves over 2 hours of modeling time when they could get a free 3D model.
And:
We understand how useful a 3D model could be. Thus, we've crawled into Internet and search for free 3D models which are available for download. Here are as much as 60 websites to download Free 3D Models. Full list after jump!
Note: Some of these 3D models have limited rights. That means they are not allowed for commercial usage. We urge that you check the rights before using them for business purposes.
Thanks to Andrew for the article suggestion!

This is very useful, I have some files also that could be of some use to others. Thanks Banor.
Good tip!
This is some great stuff! Awesome find!
Be careful when throwing the word 'free' around. Are those royalty-free or just no-cost for personal use?
@mike pan: You are right. You'll have to check the licenses on each site/model.
In the above article:
I always upload a .blend file for all my Makehuman animations. So, if you are looking for Makehuman talking heads in .blend file format, just look up zincChameleon on YouTube. Right now, I'm doing the Internet personality Lisa Nova. Websites are nice, but you get more exposure (40k hits!) on YouTube.
nice! it also links to "25 (Free) 3D Modeling Applications You Should Not Miss" => with blender on top :D
Wow! Thats lots and lots and lots of free 3D models. I'm glad to see blend files in there too.
In french, there is Blendercave for some 3d models (.blend format) : http://blendercave.tuxfamily.org/?page=categorie&cid=0
Unless you're a professional, are downloading models really a good idea?
Modelling is one of the best skills a 3d artist can learn, so any practice is good practice. In my opinion, downloading models should be left to studios, where the cost of hiring a modeller, is less than the cost of buying a model outright.
But to the rest of us, taking shortcuts can be a sure fire way to stunt your learning and never get hired.
Just my 2 cents of course.
What does everyone else think?
@redbyte : I totally agree. I must add that there is no pleasure showing a picture done using models made by someone else...
Exactly!
Because when you show someone a render they always say, "WOW! Did you do all that?!?" I take great pride in saying everytime, "yes... yes I did." *pulls smug grin*
Nice! A menu item like 'blender tutorials' for posts about free models would be nice
