CG Channel/cmiVFX Tutorial .blend File Released!

8

screenshot.pngThis is a follow-up to the article we posted a few days ago about a free Blender compositing tutorial available through an agreement between CG Channel and cmiVFX. The .blend file for that tutorial has been released! The demand for that tutorial has been the highest of any other tutorial on cmiVFX's on-demand player.

From the release announcement:

Due to the high demand for the compositing tutorial I announced a few days ago, I'm releasing the .blend file that was used to create that tutorial. When the tutorial was announced here as well as the forums at blenderartists.org and then on Blender Nation, the Blender community swamped the on-demand video player at cmiVFX. As a community, we created the highest demand for a tutorial on their system to date. We actually filled their database!

Because of this, of course, it was proving difficult for some people to view the tutorial. To help alleviate this situation (and because it was requested) the .blend file is being released into the wild.

A couple important notes:First, this .blend was created with a development version of Blender. This is important because the revision that was used is before the ‘infamous' Jahka particle branch was merged with the main development trunk. So if you desire for this .blend file to render as it is in the tutorial, you'll need to use Revision 12676 (or one near to it). BF-Builds that that you can find on graphicall.org that are dated before (but near) 26 November 2007 should work well. The biggest new features that this .blend file uses are Edit-mode UV unwrap, object selectability in the Outliner, and the Glare node in the compositor. The other thing to note is that this file is being released under the Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 United States License. This means you can use it for whatever purpose you like, so long as you give credit to Hand Turkey Studios for creating the original .blend and animation. I appreciate that the good folks at cmiVFX agreed that releasing this .blend would be a good idea. And with that, here's what you're actually looking for (or what you've skipped ahead and when directly to click on). It's a 36MB file with the textures packed into it. Right-click and save as… also, please be kind to my webhost and take advantage of the kind people willing to mirror this file:

Additional mirrors (and perhaps a torrent) will be added here. If anyone else is willing to mirror this file, please contact me via email at jason (at) handturkeystudios (dot) com.Have fun!

HUGE thanks to Jarod, patdog, and TheLichKing for mirroring the .blend file.

Full disclosure: Fweeb created the .blend file for the animation and tutorial discussed in this and the other article.

  1. Still need to actually watch the Tutorial itself, but from what i heard/read so far I can't wait to do so. Not to speak of picking apart and learning from the blend file - many thanks for that :D

  2. The tutorial was great! I was thinking while I was watching it that it would be nice to play with the .blend file... And here it is, cool beans..... It's a good day

  3. First i forgot to change the render output directory to my home directory and blender crashed... I like the windows less design, but in this case I think a little error window would not hurt. To figure this out I used gdb and a debug build. But why crash anyway... why not use a different directory and recover automatically?

  4. We really want a link to the build version use.

I download de 559 BF version, i know its recent, but i think it could be work, instead it fix the particle system and make not possible to archive the stela effect.

After i search im not really sure abot the version that dont come with the particle system rebuild.

Please could you post the a link to the version :D

  5. Hello everyone! I'm glad you've been enjoying the .blend file.

For those of you who have had problems finding a working build version, I have good news and bad news. The bad news is that there's not a specific build that I used to create this file. I downloaded the source from SVN and compiled it myself. For those of you familiar with subversion, you can checkout revision 12676 and everything should work fine after you compile.

That said, there is good news (at least for Windows and Linux users), there is a build on graphicall.org that should work for you. There's an SVN build on November 12th by alexv (Linux, Windows) that should work fine with this .blend file. For you guys using Macs, I'm sorry. I didn't see any builds on graphicall.org that I could guarantee working for you.

    Hope that helps!
