Videotutorial: Blender Tricks

21

whiteboyWhiteBoy has published a 20-minute video tutorial called 'Blender Tricks' that explains more than 25 Blender techniques.

This is an example of what I think is a well produced videotutorial. Whiteboy has a good voice, explains things in a good pace and he's taken the time to edit everything into one nice compilation.

He also avoids a pitfall that most video tutorial producers fall into: to let go of the mouse when they are not using it. As a result, the mouse is flying over the screen all the time, giving a somewhat restless result.

The only comment I have is on the quality of the video but I guess we have Google Video to blame for that..

If you're interested in more Tricks, check out the thread 'Cool things in Blender that aren't so obvious' on CGTalk.com. Maybe WhiteBoy can produce a second tutorial about them! (After all, this one is labeled 'Episode One' ;-)

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. Sorry to say that but I find the video quality simply awful. That is too bad since everything else seems to fall in place.
I publish my videos at 720x576 for about 500 Kb a minute and I am very far from being an expert. They all have clear picture, good sound ; the only drawback is that they are not totally fluid but nothing to hinder comprehension. So I guess that someone with more expertise can do much better : it is more than time to part with poor quality for Blender video tutorials.

I hate to criticize so harshly but I hate even more to see good talent going to waste that way.

    Regards

    Jean

  2. Jean? Eh? Are you sure it wasn't a problem on your end? The video was of acceptable quality on my PC.

In fact, I thought that was a really great video, WhiteBoy. Keep it up!

  3. Well ok thanks whiteboy, I guess the video and included infos are realy cool bu why publish it on Google Video in a closed format (.gvp)? I mean there so much filehosts out there or archive.org or bittorent. Wouldn't a XVID be the right for a OSS community? The quality is boor but o.k. for me...

  4. @Spiderworm :

maybe it is, although I wonder which problem it would be. I have lots of bandwidth.

    Here's a screen capture of what I see of WhiteBoy's video :

This is from Firefox but it is no better in Google Video Player.
How does it compares to what you get ?

Now one of my own videos, which I consider to be the least quality acceptable:

I don't think that it is asking too much for WhiteBoy's work that deserves it.

  5. cool video- the quality does`t matter- he described all things clear for everyone to understand.
There are still tricks i never heard about! great- i hope episode II ;) will come soon...

    thanks for that!

  6. Ehm, google offers opportunity to download the avi too, check top-right of the video page.
The .gpv videofile is a preview with slightly lower quality, for peoples whom don't want to download.

  7. Mattepiu, where do you get the avi from? When ever I try to download it from Google, all I get is the .gvp file, and then I get asked to download the Google Video Player.

  8. I tried to edit, but discovered I couldn't.

I found out a way to get around having the Google player. Download the Video iPod version. It's a .mp4 file, which can then be played on VLC Media Player. The res is a little small, but over all it's not bad.

  9. I wonder if all of my post here will be moderated and/or censored now.
Being a long time participant to Blender's life, I'd be saddened if thing came to that.

My suggestions and examples were only constructive. Hopefully this happened due to some technical reason or glitch.

  10. I suggest to don't use a closed format like Google video.

Teh Gvideo it's a DRM ready lock; please, if you like the OSS software like Blender, use also open format for encoding yours great works.

I saw this excellent Tut' last year as a download (forget where) and the quality was very good from memory. I guess it's the Google stream that kills it.

When it was released originally there where some critisms for different approaches he takes, but overall it was highly recomended.

I too wish that he would release another, as the style was easy to watch and informative.

  12. Just a word of support for IamInnocent's constructive criticisms. The display quality of Whiteboy's video tutorial is pretty crude, and there's really no reason for it. Whiteboy, please, go to an open source codec that does justice to your work, and let's see it released via Bittorrent rather than Google video.

  13. Went to the site linked in tutorial description, cannot find any link from there to the actual tutorial video...Where is it?

  15. i keep a sharp eyes on blender video tutorials

these video are helping blender heads to establish blender heads in market

    the scenario is changing rapidly

    ;)

  16. This is a great tutorial and I continue to refer back to it whenever I forget the key commands for one of the tips. Whiteboy, please bring us more! I don't really mind the Google video format since I'm used to watching a lot of videos in that format, but it couldn't hurt to publish it elsewhere too. The important thing in any video tutorial is to make sure it's easy to rewind and fast-forward, because I once encountered a Flash-based tutorial that had only stop/start buttons and if you miss one bit of info it's back to the beginning. Also, make plenty of keyframes in the video so it's easy to jump around.
