Add-on: Pose Lib Preview makes pose switching easy and fast

10

Jasper van Nieuwenhuizen's new 'Pose Lib Preview' add-on will generate thumbnails for poses of your rigs, making it easy to quickly switch to the correct pose.

Jasper writes:

Some time ago Pratik Solanki made a request to add thumbnails for poses in a pose library. I responded to his request and quickly 'hacked' something together that worked fairly well. After that I've been adding and refining some things. Most important feature I'm working on right now is automatically adding thumbnails for poses. It's almost finished but I still have some work to do.

A demonstration of the addon can be seen here:

And a quick demonstration of automatically creating thumbnails (not finished yet):

Be warned that this addon is still very much in development and more a proof of concept then a polished addon for now. So expect some rough edges and bad code... :)

If you have any suggestions, bug or comments, feel free to let me know (preferably on Github).

You can find the addon on Github.

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. great stuff ! As an animator, I've been waiting for that feature for a long time !

Though if I can make a suggestion : you could try to fit your previews in a table that is always visible, so that we only have to click once on the right image. Personally, I also would prefer to use your addon as an extra shelf just under the original pose Library so it takes less space on screen, but that is no big deal as the blender interface is really easy to navigate.
As a future development, here are some ideas :
    - a "mix power slider", so we can add 30% (or else) of the pose we click on.
    - a folder or tabs structure, so we can seperate faces, hands, body...

You may know this great plugin, "Studio Library" for maya that does it all :

Thanks again for that great development !

    • Thank you! You also added your suggestion to Github, am I right? At the moment this addon just adds the thumbnails to the current Pose Library system. For some of your suggestions I will have to create my own implementation. This might happen at some point, but for now I focus on getting the thumbnails working as smoothly as possible.

You might have also seen this one: https://vimeo.com/137046614 This doesn't work inside of Blender (which makes it harder to setup, but also more flexible), but it's quite promising. They will also give a talk at the Blender Conference.

      • I've been discovered, damned !
        ;)
Thanks for the sharing of this video. It's an interesting proposition, but unless you have two screens, it's not really practical. It also takes too many clics too as we need to switch programs all the time. I would definitly prefer to see that inside blender interface, and I think you are on the right track ! Keep going !
