I love Blender...

..and, yes, I love the camera tracker as well. I've held off on this one for a while, as even though I have used it a lot, I only recently actually used it in earnest for production work as I feel that I now know most of it's quirks.

Because, boy does it have it's quirks!

So here they are, in an all new tutorial which goes through the process of tracking in Blender as well as helping you to understand where you might have been going wrong, such as:

Undistorting your footage before you track.
Why the search area isn't visible, oh, no, there it is!
Making your tracking faster by making undistorted proxies!
What are these View Layers and Collections that have suddenly appeared?
How to work with your automatically created Base Comp.
Building geometry for real world shadows from tracking markers.

I also talk about coverr - the best free online footage source I have ever found on the web! It's like Shutterstock but free, yes that's right! FREE!!

You can find out more about that here.

Take care guys!

I am a Senior Creative over at Space Digital in the North West of England. I've been creating CG stuff for the TV and Corporate World for (mumble-mumble) years now and have been lucky to work on some amazing projects. I discovered Blender about 9 years ago, opened it and, like so many other, immediately shut it down, but several years ago I needed to so something simple and cost effective (ie. free) and Blender was the only way. I have never looked back and use it now all the time alongside Maya every working day. I also have a YouTube channel called GENVFX where I teach people how to use every modifier one by one and as deeply as I can as well as the occasional tutorial.
