  1. I tend to use volume over mist when the effect is close(ish)to my focal spot because mist tends to look flat. What I mean is volume captures light so you will get shadows and God rays as compared to most which is a simple depth map. Volume also allows for 3d effects like smoke, or clumping, which can allow for some really nice atmospheric effects, at the cost of rendering of course.
