Here is a short video explaining how to create laser scanning and image projection in Blender using Spot lights.

My Human Skull model used in the video can be downloaded for free from BlendSwap.

    • You cannot imagine how long it took me to find that 0 was the right value for the Radius. I had been trying low values but only 0 actually gives you that projector style sharpness.

I enjoy making videos that I think will help other people.

  1. Thanks alot for this tip!
I've been trying to recreate the 'scanner' effect of the small cave scanning spheres in Prometheus.
    This should do the trick.
Can you please explain the trick for the 'fog' / 'light planes' at the end of the clip?

    • I added a Mesh Cube around the skull and lamp and then set the Material output to be Volumetric and attached a Volume Scatter node.

I bumped up the power of the lamp and played around with the Volumetric settings until it was OK. Would have liked to get it a lot cleaner, but ran out of time.

Render time on the original non-volumetric 1920x1080 animation was just under 2 hours, with the volumetrics it was 2 days!

      • Thank you!
I played arond a bit and did almost the same, I didn't add a cube, but used the world settings. Good to read that your render times jumped up too ;)...
