Darkfall VFX Nodes Add-on (Version 1.2)

Hey everyone,

The Darkfall VFX Nodes (Version 1.2) is now available to download. Head over to our blog and click the link to get started.

This is the second update for the VFX Nodes Add-on. Last week I changed the process and made things much easier. Along with relocating the add-on to now be inside the compositor window, I added a new effect - The Gradient Node.

This Week, I further refined the UI and grouped the Effects into categories so you can easily select the effect you want.

Aside from UI changes, you will see two new additions; the Gradient Node and the Scan Line Generator.

Both are pretty simple but they help speed up our workflow. For example, to add a blend/gradient to the compositor, we would have to do around ten or eleven different things before we can add a gradient.

With this tool, we can click one button and not only will the Gradient texture be created but the node will also be added to the compositor.

The Scan line generator has a few different uses, for example you could create a sort of futuristic sci-fi overlay effect and so on.

A more fitting use of the scan line generator, would be for the Glitch effect. If you remember, the effect required you to have an image that will be used for the glitch. now you can add this one node and it can also be modified for variations.

Another addition we have is the Render Settings panel. I decided to add the most common settings we need to change before rendering (if you think something should be added let us know).

And finally, I added a properties Panel, so when you select a node you can adjust the settings within the panel instead of zooming in and out of the nodes to try and see what options you want to change (I am not sure how useful you will find this, so let me know in the comments if you like it or not).

If you have made a suggested improvement, I will be making some changes based on what you guys have said but they may not be changed right away. Rest assured I have noted everyone's comments and will try and achieve as much as possible!..

So that's it for this week's update!, be sure to check out the next update. I hope guys find this helpful and thanks for getting involved.

  1. I'd love to use these, but I'm new to blender, and don't know how to install/implement these python scripts.
Can you give us a little how-to for those of us with less code experience?

    Thanks.
    These look amazing and useful.

    Addon request!

When using blender like this (i.e., like After Effects) it would be really nice to access it as a "layer based" workflow somewhere. This would be a pure UI addon, just a nicer way of organizing all the controls on some nodes. Perhaps there could be a section in the toolbox where a series of groupnode UIs could be viewed as a vertical list, minimized/maximized to show their custom group properties, and dragged up and down to re-order the groups feeding into each other?
