Did you know that you can find lots of great animation reference for animal walks and runs made a long time ago, by Eadweard Muybridge? They're in the public domain now. This video shows how to bring them into Blender.

Hi Jan,
Thank you very much for this, and all your other tips! They are very informative and inspiring.
After seeing some images of Eadweard Muybridge I immediately got to trying out animating these spritesheets in Blender. Right now it's the manual way, but I hope to automate the intervals in a next version. I created a Time-lapse of the process here: https://youtu.be/YHDKoFQmWns
I also created a collage of the animations, the results can be seen here: https://youtu.be/ADifovWREdw
The Blend-file can be found here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/zoiectx2rfc39uw/Eadweard%20Muybridge.blend?dl=0
Greetings,
Ruben
That's nice Ruben! Funny that you call them spritesheets ;-) Nice collage.
