We need a splash screen again! Proposal is to ask the artist community for it again.

Design target: make a splash to promote (or celebrate) the Blender Development Fund. Something that’s fun, engaging, positive, and doesn’t look like an annoying advertisement. Could be anything… but what?

Deadline: 14 November last day to submit proposals.

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

    • I agree, the desktop icon could do with a refresh - perhaps a shiny, more eevee style icon? Alternatively, it could be changed to an indistinct smear of grey on a grey background, to match the new user interface icons?

  1. The image could show the progress in artsy way, the closer the fund target, the better the image. The splash could look simple, but nice, and gradually add things in the picture. You would get a better image similarly like you would get clan perks when your clan in a mmorpg reaches milestones from its user contributions.

The splash art could progress from interesting sketch, to rough concept, to 3d render, add effects/lighting,etc.
Or it could add things into the picture - start from simple land, add sakura tree, add river, add wind and leaves, add a character, ie. uncover an art piece that would tell emotional story and reveal it piece by piece. It could be cyberpunk city filling with buildings, cars, lights, atmosphere and person/s or animals, you get the idea.
Another approach would be to show something growing, being baked, a character creating something. Lastly it could be just a story progression, like a storyboard.

This would be nicer than showing a progress bar, but some tiny one could accompany the picture.
