While WebGL has come a LONG way, showing huge datasets in the browser it still a challenge. Typical browsers can handle models of up to several million polygons, but what if you need much, much more than that? Today, Sketchfab has unveiled an alpha version of MASSIVE, a new product that uses streaming geometry and automatic level of detail to display large datasets in the browser.
Give it a try - the example below contains 80M polygons:
The product is still in early stages and only supports vertex colors at this moment. Multi-res optimized textures and optimized support for mobile devices is coming up. MASSIVE is expected to launch in 2019.
You can find more information about MASSIVE on the Sketchfab blog. Two additional large scene examples can be found here.
