Why a render farm matters

Jamesy writes:

Often the time taken to render a project can come to dictate the end result. Deadlines demand a result, and perhaps not the best results in the eyes of the artist.

In this short article we talk about distributed rendering, how its not just faster, but gives you more flexibility in terms of final quality of your work versus the time taken to render it and how by adding more computers to your render farm, you can increase quality without sacrificing render time.

We also present an example of recent benchmarks we've run using our distributed rendering addon for blender. This example shows how multiple computers can be used to reduce render times or increase quality. Our software is free to download. All you need is two computers to run it (both require blender 2.78 minimum) and our addon installed.

I'm a software engineer, I've worked on numerous technologies over the past 10 years. I started out working on full motion flight simulators and then worked with embedded systems. I now work on building an add-on to support rendering using multiple computers over internet/local networks. I started using blender in 2009 and have done small projects with it since then, however, crowd render, our network rendering add-on is by far the biggest adventure with Blender to date.
