Gottfried Hofmann writes:

The transform widgets (move, rotate, scale) got an update in Blender 2.8 - they are now more powerful and the "scale cage" is all new. And some shortcuts have been changed.

We want object layers back! The new thing they were replaced with called Collections don't seem to offer the capability of hiding / showing groups of objects in the viewport, as well as limiting certain objects to certain render layers. This is a disastrous feature removal!

    • Hiding / showing groups of objects in the viewport works really well with collections (click on the eye-icon next to a collection in the outliner).
Render layers should hopefully come back...

Oh... that is how you hide / show them? I guess that makes sense, as it's in line with hiding and showing other things... I'll sure miss the 0-9 shortcut keys though. Losing render layer support is a huge regression though... I imagine the devs aren't thinking of releasing 2.8 until that's brought back.

I fully agree about the speed of the old layer keys

but the new collections offer more depth in structuring your designs.

A collection can contain the raw model and refined model and render model or variations etc something I use a lot as a product designer

          • Trere are two different systems.
Layers is about speed, and transparent control consistency.
Collections is about flexibility and compartibilty.

I am for Layers because it teaches artists to think about content management, Collections will bring a mess.
Just like in autocad, 3dsmax, photoshop, AE, sketchup and any other software with legacy layer system artists deal with.

Now software reduces layer count (like in BIM), so blender layers was ahead of time.

Also those systems are opposite to each other - so it is unclear how developers want to "replace" them.

  2. for the rotation
would it be possible to also be able to set specificn angle value
for mechanical design that would be great

    thanks
    happy cl

  3. Sorry, off topic, but:
    1) Is anything going to be done about the generally fuzzy 3D viewport quality in 2.8? The semi-opaque wire frame mode is terrible, and does not improve complex vertex selections.
    2) Do we really have to lose Tab to enter Edit Mode? Pressing 2 is not as natural or as easy to find (without looking at the keyboard). This seems like a real (and unnecessary) step backward. If this has really changed forever, 2.8 must have a User Preference to select Tab for edit mode!

  4. The fuzziness is also scaring me a lot. Seems there's a lot of Antialiasing Trouble ....... It NEEDS to be fixed

  5. there s probably some reasons to change the overall UI but when it comes to attract new users I think the idea
is not so good at all... imagine all the (beginner) tutorials on you tube and other channels will be completely useless.. and even more confusing at least...that s a real pity..
Where will the the tabs ( bool tools, extended and so on...)from the left side be located in version 2.8?
although I am very exited to give it a try soon , I am missing the tab function already ;-)

I find that the current method of hardy showing the 3d widget quite annoying. It seems the select tool is a very dominant state. Why cant the short cuts g,t,s simply active the tool?
