This year, 6 students will be joining the Google Summer of Gode to work on Blender improvements.
The six projects are:
- Rohan Rathi - Bevel Modifier Improvements
- Leonardo E. Segovia - Implementing a Hair Shader for Cycles
- Erik Englesson - Many Light Sampling
- Geraldine Chua- Further Development for Cycles' Volume Rendering
- Yiming Wu - Blender NPR Line Rendering Improvement
- Alekulyn - Optimizing Exporting and Importing For STL and PLY File Formats

It's nice to see again project from Rohan Rathi but it would be even better if his previous GSoC could be merged to the master (https://developer.blender.org/D2897?id=10020).
Do any of the previous GSoC projects was ever merged into the master? I've checked couple of them and can't find one.
Yep I would also like to see it get merged. Probably left out because of work on 2.8 but still it seems like an useful tool.
The denoising feature came from GSOC in 2016.
"Optimizing Exporting and Importing For STL and PLY File Formats"
Great news - I frequently import STLs from our mechanical designers, but they always need some 'pre-cleaning' in Blender before I can use them, namely:
1) Remove identical coplanar faces.
2) Perform tris-to-quads (to simplify things a bit).
3) Scale 0.001 (all products are designed in mm, which come into Blender as meters!).
4) Remove doubles (loads of them).
5) Set origin to geometry, because it's often way out in space somewhere.
I have a python script for all these steps permanently ready in a text window, but it would be nice if these could be set up in Blender as permanent 'official' options for STL import.
I may be wrong, but AFAIK the optimization was about rewriting in c what some Python. Not sure about adding new features. Better to look for the task in blender and add a note there if you have simple suggestions to be implemented
Yiming Wu - Blender NPR Line Rendering Improvement - Is this for 2.8 already?
