I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

    • Yep I would also like to see it get merged. Probably left out because of work on 2.8 but still it seems like an useful tool.

  1. "Optimizing Exporting and Importing For STL and PLY File Formats"
Great news - I frequently import STLs from our mechanical designers, but they always need some 'pre-cleaning' in Blender before I can use them, namely:
    1) Remove identical coplanar faces.
    2) Perform tris-to-quads (to simplify things a bit).
    3) Scale 0.001 (all products are designed in mm, which come into Blender as meters!).
    4) Remove doubles (loads of them).
    5) Set origin to geometry, because it's often way out in space somewhere.

I have a python script for all these steps permanently ready in a text window, but it would be nice if these could be set up in Blender as permanent 'official' options for STL import.

    • I may be wrong, but AFAIK the optimization was about rewriting in c what some Python. Not sure about adding new features. Better to look for the task in blender and add a note there if you have simple suggestions to be implemented
