Basic Audio Editing in the Video Sequence Editor

3

Darkfall writes:

In this quick tutorial, we look at how we can make simple edits to our audio in the Video Sequence Editor.

For those who have seen my earlier tutorials will already know how bad my audio was. Not to mention how quiet it was too. I didn't want to download an additional program just to increase the volume. So after playing around in the V.S.E.for a while I found out how to fix my problem.

I will also show you how you can change the pitch of your audio too, along with creating Fade Ins/Outs.

  1. Useful tip, but how about some tips on getting audio and video in sync? Frequently, imported audio and video don't sync even if the frame rate is carefully set in the Dimensions panel before importing any clips. This is often because devices lie, showing '30 fps' in their menu when they're actually recording 29.97, or some other weirdness. I recently had to manually offset an audio track by 8 frames to get correct lip-sync.

Then there's the Sync settings next to the Timeline's transport controls (do they do anything?)...
...and the Audio settings panel on the Scene tab (what's that about?)
...and the Sound settings on the User Preferences' System panel
...and all the Format / Codec / Audio codec options on the Render tab's Encoding panel, where most combinations don't work...

An overview that explains all these scattered settings / traps would be great ;-)

    • Audio syncing is a problem in blender, we should be able to zoom into the waves, i hope one day it will be improved in this area. (vertical zoom wave peeks + horizontal (time) zoom

    • Thanks for your comments, My knowledge of the V.S.E. (the audio side) is still a little limited. I only started using the V.S.E. out of need and found it did the trick for me.. But I am still playing around with it to see what more it can do.

As far as I know the sync button at the bottom, isn't that for the Playback only?...

I have not had any trouble syncing my audio to the movies but then again I have not done complex shots with multiple dialogue. It would be interesting to see your workflow, I assume you add the movie clip then add each of your audio files?.

There are plenty more things this can do and I would like to show you more. This tutorial was really basic and I hope it helped a little but you are right, an overview would be helpful.
