Tutorial: How to make Snow in Blender

6

Did you enjoy Pietro's Snow Simulation? How about creating your own snowy scene with this new Blender Guru tutorial?

Andrew Price writes:

You can ski down it, make snow angles or throw it at someone’s face. Snow just makes everything awesome.

Maybe it’s due to growing up in QLD Australia (where it never snows), but I’ve been fascinated with snow all my life. And every Christmas I’m slightly envious of all the snow pictures that appear in my newsfeed from folks in Canada or the US :P

If you’ve tried making snow in Blender though you’ll know that it’s actually quite challenging to pull off. I made a snow tutorial back in 2010, but I wanted to make an updated version for Cycles.

In this tutorial you’ll discover a new method for making beautiful snow that works on any scene.

Discover How To:

  • Make tire tracks and footprints in snow
  • Paint realistic displacements using Photoshop or Gimp
  • Create a realistic snow shader for Cycles

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. Nice tutorial,
I only wonder, would it be possible to create such brushes in Blender, instead of gimp/photoshop/...
So then one could see live how the bump behaves in 3d.
