How do I add a single vertice? Also, what does ctrl+a do?
You can access a single vert by pressing shift-a and selecting "add singe vert."
If this option is not there then its probably not the latest version of blender. You can download the latest version, or just add a plane and in vertices select mode delete three vertices of the plane. That will leave you with just one vert.
ctrl+a is a shortcut that is used to increase or decrease thickness in the skin modifier.
Hope that helps! :)
Add a plane and delete three of the verts. Ctrl+A selects all and then doing it again deselects all
You can't add a single vertex, but you can add a plane and delete the other three vertices. Or if you are working with a mesh already, press shift-d to duplicate one vertex by itself.
Actually you can add a single vertex. You just have to enable "extra objects" under add mesh add-ons in preferences.
Hey, nice Tutorial! The combination of single vertices and skin modifier offers a way better workflow than the one I used previously (simple trunk with branches glued at the sides), to get more freedom. But I have a little issue after subdividing.

Great Tutorial. I really learned a lot from it. The Render looks super. Thanks a lot for sharing this.
