We need more of these kind of Cycles renders - more artistic. Too many Cycle renders go for that realistic look - the same look in almost every single Cycles image that I have seen up till now.
How about a hybrid? More artistry within realism? A photographer can tell one "truth" or another by using lighting, timing and composition. Surely Blender can do the same.
well then that would be up to the artist. there's a lot of options to choose from to get the desired effect. by default it will usually attempt to look good as far as lighting and shader quality, but it's flexible enough that interesting areleastic images can be produced
I think we agree, if I understand your point correctly. Artistry and a realistic render need not be mutually exclusive.

yep. they don't HAVE to be exclusive, it's just with this particular rendering engine it's just easier than before to make it look real. (though, ofc no engine can make shapes and placement look nice, so that offers possibilities for fantastic or surreal scenes as well)

An iconic space craft, as it made only 1 unmanned flight.
Maybe you can do another CG based flight :)

isn't cycles designed to produce a more realistic look than BI?
