Campbell is working on drawing colored wireframes in the 3D view. His work is available as a patch right now, so you can compile your own Blender and test it.
Campbell writes:
Had a crack at the wireframe color issue. I dont think its compatible with regular viewport wire drawing (which I think is why we rejected previous patches), but it could be an option like matcaps.

Fantastic
Awesome, I really missed this feature!
This takes me back to my 3d studio for dos days! Looks nice!
On the subject of viewport wireframe drawing, the one mode I'd love to see blender get is an "occluded wireframe" view (ie a closer wireframe face/object can obscure those behind it). I find it's a great way to see your geometry without things getting too cluttered. Right now I get something similar by turning on wire drawing in object properties on top of a shaded view, which is alright, although it has to be done for each object. Oh and wire transparency! But now I'm just getting greedy :P
Have you tried the hidden wire option in Edit mode? It sound like it's what you want. Might be mistaken though :-)
awesome, thank you! i totally missed that and it is exactly what i was looking for! Although it currently can only operate on a single object in edit mode, hopefully in the future it could get added as a global option for wireframe view. :)
Pretty cool.. Thanks Campbell :)
This is a very important resource!! I hope it will be integrated to Blender on the next versions!
Very nice. Could be very useful.
Wow, reminds me of AutoCAD :)
colored wire frame is one of those things that looks awful but for some situations there is no better solution, It will be awesome to have for the times when you need it.
Out of interest, can you assign different colors to different object's ie have characters blue, props red and the scene black?
Indeed it often looks awful, but trying to find geometry in single color is often impossible. Definitely useful. I just hope color setting will be simplified.. like use of existing viewport color parameter of cycles or smth like that, to avoid another set of buttons.
I hope this makes it into trunk.
It is actually very useful when you work with in product design as well to separate logically objects.
Campbell is best ever.
This is something I've always dreamed of for Blender. An invaluable improvement for architectural (and other sorts of) modeling. I hope it gets merged into the official branch.
This will be a dream come true, if it makes it into official builds. When I first tried to set this up during a project a few months ago, I couldn't believe this wasn't already possible. Especially given all of the
customization Blender's interface offers.
Why it still isn't implemented officially?
What is current plan? this feature will be awesome to have in blender. Hopefully it is really possible to integrate to blender next version.
