Krita, the open source sketching and painting program, has released an update.
Maria Far writes:
Only 5 months after we released Krita 2.6, we release Krita 2.7 today! There are a lot of cool new features, bug fixes and improvements. Soon to come to a Linux distribution near you.
The "highlights" of Krita 2.7:
- Rewritten and hugely improved transform tool.
- New line smoothing method for inking.
- Greyscale masks and selections.
But there are more improvements..

The windows x64 version is a lot faster for me than previous versions. Great.
You just can't have too many texture-painting tools, internal or external with Blender.
Oh this is awesome news! I can't wait to try it out!
Downloaded this last night.
Played with it for about 3 hours.
I still can't draw.
But I loved the experience.
Still no Mac love... :/
Yeah, Im also waiting for a Mac version - but even the windows version is full of bugs.....
Oh well. Since I've been using Manga Studio 5 nothing can come close anyway.
If I'm not mistaken, they recently got a Mac Mini and a Mac version is in the works. They haven't had any Mac support because they hadn't any Mac to develop on. Though, you might can use the Windows version through a virtual machine.
Yes... I've got a mac mini now, but I still lack the time to spend on porting Krita properly to OSX. I got it building once, but running it gave trouble :-( And just working on the Windows packages already steals a huge amount of time that I would otherwise use for bug fixes!
I'm surprise they don't make an Android version you can load into a phone or tablet.
Works great on windows tablets, even on the $350 Lynx.
The last version was kind of buggy, so I didn't use it much. Can't wait to try this one.
IMO Krita is a serious contender to be considered a full-time photoshop alternative. I was kinda bummed out when the support for tablets was broken in the last version, but I am definitely trying out this one! Will update here as soon as I get my hands on it!
Hey Bart, David Revoy has written a fairly detailed guide to the new features in 2.7 (With Videos!), It might be a good idea to link it in the post?
I really want to like this, and I applaud their effort, but I just can't use it.
It looks like it works great for the people who can actually get it running properly.
Tried the Sketch version on my Lenovo dual-core with a Wacom tablet interface, running XP pro, and the lag meant that it took upward of 30 seconds for a menu item to open.
Never did figure out why it wasn't actually drawing on the canvas, either.
Still, it's great to see open-source concepts like this and I hope they work the bugs out. I'd love to be able to integrate this into my workflow.
