18th Century Navy Cutter Scenes

Seawolf has created a series of stunning naval images.

seawolf writes:

I'm working on a model of an eighteenth-century naval cutter. That is a 70 feet vessel used for hunting smugglers at the British coastline. These cutters were amongst the fastest vessels of their time.

As reference I use Lennarth Petersson's book “Rigging Period Fore-and -Aft Craft” that provides fine drawings of a cutter.

Rendered with Cycles

The current model has all details of the cutter but only rudimentary materials.

Next steps are:

  • refined materials especially for the hull
  • wrinkles and creases in the sails
  • some automation to adjust the “running rigging” (curves, bones)
  • a crew of ~10 sailors with historical clothes
  • a realistic ocean environment

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.
