Check out the mayhem in this music video!

I would like to share a result of a long-term project I've started working on in 2010. I wanted to create a video (which ended up being a music video) full of VFX such as tornadoes, sky replacement, particles, debris etc. Using Blender at some point became a mission – I didn't want to hear about any other 3d package. I was trying to figure out a pipeline which incorporates After Effects, Photoshop, Premiere Pro, Blender and Mocha for AE in a really big project. There are about 136 shots and 110 of them contains some visual effects.

I've been thinking about WIP thread many times but it just didn't happen. I still have some issues with my pipeline but I managed to finish the project.

The full result can be seen here (you can turn on English subtitles at the beginning):

"Making-of" video is on its way. If you want to know more about the band, the lyrics or the creation process you can visit this blenderartists.org thread.

I wish to thank Blender's great community and I welcome any comments :)

  1. SFX and filming is really great! I was attracted to this! :)

P.S. Polsky village punk rock detected :) The music idea is good, performance suxx!

    • Thanks :) As far as the band is concerned, they were playing for fun, they did it for fun, nobody was planning a big career ;) I imagine most professional musicians would complain about having to run for hours with their guitars or about being attacked with wooden planks, and we would never do it.

      • I really like the effects. :) You did good job with everything except directing (and syncing the sounds), but since I did read your comment I bet everything were recorded with few shots in 2010 and then rest of the time were used in blender.

It's bit sad cause I can see from this that it would be really nice (and it really is really really nice, but it would have been almost perfect). That's why I were so harsh with my comment, sorry about it.
I don't wanna be nasty, but I really believe that blender community needs this kind of comments.

        • Hi, thanks for your comment :) You're not harsh, I like people being honest the way you are. Simple hating is what we shouldn't tolerate ;) So thanks again for supporting your opinion with some specific examples.
I agree that Blender community could use more constructive criticism in some cases.

As far as your comments are concerned - what was bad about the directing in your opinion? I thought it's quite ok, the guys are not actors you know. They did better than I expected after pushing them a little. Everything was recorded exactly as I planned and that was my big satisfaction back in 2010. I had to do everything, also transport and stuff. Some shots had to be simple for post-production purposes.

Sound-syncing - again, what's the problem? I've experienced some problems with YouTube in the past (it somehow managed to get the sound out of sync) but this time it should be ok. Any specific moments?

Thanks again for taking your time and writing your comment :)

  2. I actually liked the music! Reminded me of playing with my garage-rock-band when I was 17. =)

And the vfx worked very well, although the grading was a bit overboard...

    • I think you're one of the few people who liked the music, but your reasons are taken from your life :) That's nice, you understand what is it about - the guys were a garage band, doing it for fun. Some of them had barely starter when we recorded this.

About the grading - it's always a huge problem, at least for me. You can go is so many directions. I decided to desaturate a lot. Is that what you didn't like? I also had to introduce some things to make it look ok on most monitors which means I had to make it a bit brighter than I liked it on my screen.

      Thanks again :)

  3. You know I actally really enjoyed watching this. You said you did everything? Well good job. Regarding the band, their music was stuck in my head for a a while after watching this, which is a good thing, considering I didn't understand a word they were saying. (Only down side was the vocalist sort of killed it with his complete lack of tone. I also used to be in a punk garage band, so I know what I am talking abot here.)

Garage band or not, this is a great reel for them and you. Have you got any more projects lined up? If so, try to get a team together that you can coordinate well, so you can knock them out quicker. You have talent and it showed.

I was going to ask about your workflow then just read your link on BA and it answered all my questions. Great work.

Say thanks to the band for their hard work too.
