Ron Proctor uses Blender for a pumpkin projection.
Ron writes:
While taking a break from Blender-based planetarium show production (see the latest), I thought I'd try a little surface projection.
Here's my first in-situ test. I've got more work to do, but I thought I'd share the idea now, in case any Blendheads are looking for something to do this week. ^_^

Funny idea, and nicely done !o)
The bummer is you have to have all that gear sitting right in front of the pumpkins for it to work. So it looses the flair. Would be cool if you could rig the projector out of the way some so people don't immediately realize what's going on ... but hey, I don't even own a projector so ...
Update: Here's the new one with unique faces (and two troublemakers).

With a simple webcam setup, you could make them watch people approaching on the steps.
