rosa_bn_thumbRosa will come to the big screen!

Reynante Martinez writes:

A few months ago, we have seen the public internet release of 'Rosa', the short sci-fi film by Jesús Orellana, see also this post on BlenderNation.

And just a few days ago, there was exciting news at Short of the Week that 20th Century Fox decided to bring Rosa into a feature length film. Quoted at Short of the Week announcement: "Our good friend, Jesús Orellana, in just one month has lived the dream of short filmmakers everywhere. After the online launch of his masterful sci-fi Rosa last month, he’s caught the attention of execs at 20th Century Fox who’ve decided to bring his story to the big screen with him as director."

Congratulations, Jesús!

  1. Congrats & good luck with this! If blender really was involved in the making of Rosa don't forget to mention it in the big studio with some credits too :)

  2. I hope they give a chunk of the money they get for production into developing Blender, especially the VSE. and openCL integration.

  3. Very nice little movie.
But apparently while rather technically impressive, this movie was made in a DAZ  program using various purchasable assets available for it, it has nearly nothing to do with Blender out of an object or two that "may" have been modelled with Blender.

  4. from the original post:
"I used Daz Studio as the base program, everything was planned, animated and rendered in Daz Studio. I used Blender to model and modify props, as well as for all the physics like for example cloths, plastics or blood that were later added in post-production to the Daz Studio Renders."Really impressive work and considering that's a one man show...Congrats, Jesús! Enjoy the moment, you really deserve!

  5. I love it!,however the different between DAZ and Blender is that in blender artists don't copy and paste to animate..Blender create "Real artist"..

  6. Get of the Blender bandwagon and just be happy for the guy.  It doesn't matter what software the guy used. He created an awesome short by himself and it should be inspiration to other artists out there that are trying to make a living.

  7. Ton should have fired all the Sintel team, except for a few main developers) and just hire this one guy.  Just kidding and peace.

  8. congrats!  Not sure how this translates to a feature though.  With no DAZ dolls,  and real actors what are they getting?    Just
a weak story and some scene design.   No doubt Blender will be dumped for Maya by the FX team.

  9. I liked the movie(doesn't matter what software he used, it was probably hard work to do) but I can't say I know exactly what the story was about, only that it was awesome, so not sure what kind of film Fox intend to weave around it, I just hope they won't compromise the interesting style of the world created in the short when they do the film.

As a Maya User I find that the Maya Dynamics takes some hardcore research and experimentation to get it to work properly(unless you can afford all sorts of special plugins, if you ever tried to do hair in Maya, you know what I'm talking about), also the Maya Fluid simulation is great, but ironically not that great for simulating fluids so typically VFX do the fluid simulation in RealFlow anyway.(otherwise RealFlow would be out of business).

  10. Why can't some of you guys just be glad for the guy?  I mean, seriously, someone achieves something, and some over-bearing critics come along and try to bring people down.  People can b so divisive in this world.  He used Blender in his production--that's enough to acknowledge his accomplishment here on BlenderNation.  Can't you just be glad of that much?  And I dare half of you critizing him to produce something even half the quality of this work, with or without other software besides Blender!  Stop being such self-righteous losers and overly-proud purists and learn how to just be glad for people with something like this.

On to other news, congrats, Jesús!  That's really inspirational, man!  Shows how hard work can really pay off.

    • thanks for saying this MacroManJr, come on guys please show that Blender users are not a bunch of douche bags and haters. Jesus well done I hope you get to make a good movie this is a once in a lifetime chance so grab it, use it you talent and hardwork have paid off

      • Benjamin Lindquist on

I so agree with you on this. Who cares if he didn't model everything and used presets. This short has great directing, compositing, rendering etc. all that stuff that imo makes this very impressive anyway.

I think it should have been mentioned that presets were used though. That would have saved him from some unnecessary bashing.

Sure it would have been cool if all the models and textures etc. were selfmade but then it would have taken a lot longer with a similar result. In addition I really doubt he was trying to show off his modelling skills with this.

  11. Well deserved, congratulations.
My opinion: good thing Blender is inserted into a production line. Also, it's too easy to obtain dull results from DAZ, and this one is anything but dull. So, hats on.

    • I totally agree with you. Daz studio is free at the moment. I'd like the 'haters' and those saying that you can get awesome clips by pressing a couple of buttons to go get it and then try to make ONE cool image (don't forget that Jesus made 10 minutes of eye candy with it). I dare them...

  12. Congrats to everyone involved. ^^ No matter what, it turned out to be a great promo for DAZ studio. The short led me to know the availability of great free human models. But I'm afraid that I have to say it has led me to waste a lot of time probing into other potential of DAZ studio. I have great respect for content creators for DAZ studio but I just don't like wasting my time looking for a potential that's not there.

  13. Rosa took amazing vision, persistance, and creativity. I think formost, this is what should be recognized from artists, the art, not the tools used. I appreciate an inclusive stance that BN has and IMO it helps keep a healthy and broad perspective.

Hats off to BN for bringing exciting news from a fellow blender user and a huge and well deserved congratulations to Jesús Orellana!

An incredible 3D short film with very good sound production.

  14. For what it's worth, my feeling is that Rosa is primarily an achievement of very good directorial skill and creative vision (it's tight and looks and sounds great), and has directly led to directorial involvement in a live feature, so hats off to Jesus for an entirely worthy personal success. Job done. But... I can't quite bring myself to appreciate it on a rounded technical achievement basis, simply because of the pre-made assets side of things. For the projected feature, I suspect both Daz and Blender will probably not figure in the production. Just life, really.

  15. I am really happy for you, Jesus. I love Rosa, I've watched your short about ten times and I'm still discovering new stuff. It just shows what can be done when creativity takes control of the software.

We'll see you on Celebrity News programmes all over the world soon, yes? :D

  16. @MacroManJr.

Credit where credit is due, but I have yet to see a response from Jesus about any of the points or queries that have been raised about the making of this "on zero budget by one person" by someone who claims to have had very little 3D experience until they made this film "in a year". I'm sorry, but I don't believe it and won't until I see some evidence. If it really was the case (ignoring the disingenuous "zero budget" which is quite frankly rubbish) then good luck to him. However it seems to have been made using pre-built models and scenes, has no storyline and has action sequences straight from The Matrix - all rather cliched. Impressive eye candy, but as empty as a hole in a wall.

I will grant him this - if he got a Hollywood studio to back him then he's obviously done the right things. Perhaps he should watch out though - they will take his non-story and make what they want from it.

I guess we will find out in a few years time what becomes of him.

    • I see no fake here. A short film of tremendous production quality can be done in a year by single person - that's how animation schools operate. Advertising productions have very small teams (sometimes one person) and very fast turnaround, still the quality boggles mind (of course they are professionals with years of experience).

Zero budget in real life can be a few thousand euros (depends of the person) or anything that is used also for other purposes (like a computer which is not used only for one production therefore zero budget for that particular production).

And in this case he apparently used a) premade models and b) premade animation (from mocap libraries). It's not really that impossible to piece together stuff that way, it takes away most modelling, all the rigging and character animation and leaves more directorial stuff to be concentrated upon like lighting, camera work and editing. Sound and music was also canned. And I see nothing wrong about that.

  17. While it's cool that he got some attention for his work, I personally feel it's boring and overrated. What's the story? All I see is different cyborgs shooting at each other for no apparent reason. How exactly can you stretch this out into a feature length movie? Coming from a supposed comic book artist, surely he knows that success rests on having a good story, which this is most definitely lacking. But then again, Hollywood doesn't exactly care about good story, just lots of explosions and gunfire.

  18. "ROSA is an epic sci-fi short film that takes place in a post-apocalyptic
world where all natural life has disappeared. From the destruction
awakes Rosa, a cyborg deployed from the Kernel project, mankind’s last
attempt to restore the earth’s ecosystem. Rosa will soon learn that she
is not the only entity that has awakened and must fight for her
    survival." - http://vimeo.com/31894179

How is that not a story? This has so much potential! and you can only show so much within 10 minutes.

    • The story does have a lot of potential. I like the concept. I can see how people don't "get it" or understand how it can be fleshed out but what the short does in ten minutes with expression and action a film can do tenfold with dialogue and additional characters. I'm looking forward to seeing where it goes.

  19. Yeah!!! Good on you!!!!! Well done and I seriously can't wait to see this in feature form, that short was gorgeous!! ...... I hope it's in Stereo 3D !!!!

  20. Hollywood studios tend to look for people who can handle special effects. Many other filmmakers who've been found online like Fede Alvarez (Panic Attack) and Patrick Jean (Pixels) have demonstrated similar skills. Like it or not, studios don't lose much sleep over story development. That's more of a known entity.

But being able to pull off compelling visuals on a low budget is no small feat, and Jesús deserves some major props for the vision he put forward.

  21. A live action from a 3D animation by Fox :/
This had me worried because Fox tried a similar thing with Dragonball and failed
In any case, well done Jesus and good luck :D
