DraftSight: Free 2D CAD software for your DWG files Win-OSX-Linux
Cheggour Hamza reported that Dassault Systemes released DraftSight a free 2D CAD software to edit and create DWG files. It is available natively for Win, OSX, and also Linux.

Really nice but when I try to install it under Ubuntu 64bit I got “wrong architecture” message in App Manager although I got lib32 isntalled. Anyone managed to run it under 64 bit Ubuntu?

f the install process doesn’t launch look on the terminal for the missing libraries, for me I had to install those packages, but it depends on your system :

the DWG files serves only as a 2D blueprint,
to import them into blender they must be converted into DXF format,
and in general you always need some clean-up before importing, cleaning the measurements, text, hatches..etc
for windows users I suggest DoubleCAD XT it’s more feature complete than DraftSight, but sadly it doesn’t work on linux
for linux users I think DraftSight is the best choice for now.
also I suggest installing the windows version on linux (via WINE), it works a litle faster than the native linux build !
Dank für die Buchung der Spitze hier:) @ anton / Bryce der DWG-Dateien dient nur als 2D-Plan, um sie in Blender importieren sie in DXF-Format konvertiert werden muss, und im allgemeinen braucht man immer einige Aufräumarbeiten vor dem Import, der Reinigung des Messungen, Text, Schraffuren etc. .. Für Windows-Benutzer empfehle ich DoubleCAD XT ist es mehr als feature complete DraftSight, aber leider nicht auf Linux für Linux-Anwender arbeiten denke ich DraftSight ist die beste Wahl für heute. Ich schlage vor, auch die Installation der Windows-Version auf Linux (via WINE), funktioniert es eine litle schneller als die native Linux zu bauen!

As noted elsewhere, most non-autodesk CAD vendors provide free 2D AutoCAD clones, and a couple even have free 3D offerings. This one in particular comes from a vendor (SolidWorks) that tries very hard to listen to, and implement feedback from, its user-base. A good choice among several viable options.
Also, will plug HeeksCAD/CAM again here… (http://code.google.com/p/heekscad) an ongoing effort that’s still early-on, and hobbyist-focussed, but has some good capability already. Check it, yo…

Just recalled another excellent option posted by FishB8 on BA a while back (http://blenderartists.org/forum/showthread.php?198987-New(ish)-FOSS-CAD-software-project ) now called LibreCAD (http://www.librecad.org/ – formerly called Caduntu) which is based on QCAD for linux and has a Windows version. Haven’t tried the latest, but I gave it a go back then and it looked really nice! Might be an option for some…

DraftSight is a very excellent autocad replacement for 2D line work and the commands are VERY close to the same in the command line, I used ACAD for years, switching to DraftSight is CAKE. Perfect for those who might use ACAD at work but cannot get a legit copy for home. It is also lightweight enough to run on my netbooks!! I LOVE the richline tool, it works perfect for walls and detailing ductwork (which I do at work), I am very excited to see a cross-platform CAD that is so capable!
DraftSight ist eine sehr gute AutoCAD Ersatz für 2D-Linie Arbeit und die Befehle sind sehr nah an der gleichen in der Befehlszeile, habe ich seit Jahren ACAD, die Umstellung auf DraftSight ist Kuchen. Perfekt für diejenigen, die bei der Arbeit ACAD könnte zu verwenden, aber bekomme keine legit Kopie für zu Hause. Es ist auch leicht genug, um auf meinem Netbook laufen! Ich liebe die richline Tool perfekt für Wände und Detaillierung Rohrleitungen (was ich bei der Arbeit), ich bin sehr aufgeregt, um eine Cross-Plattform sehen CAD das ist so in der Lage funktioniert!
the problem is that it import seldom dxf dwg files. I tried to import files saved as dxf dwg from Sketchup, and neither will import into DraftSight.
The only thing i could import was .dxf .dwg from Acad. That’s all.
Since blender 2.5 doesn’t have the dxf exporter i don’t know if the file can be imported properly in DraftSight.
Also, i noticed that DraftSight crashes a lot. when it starts and when you try to import something. I have win7 on 64 bit, and a decent pc for 3d.
das Problem ist, dass es selten DXF DWG-Dateien importieren. Ich habe versucht, Dateien wie DXF DWG aus SketchUp importieren gespeichert, und wird weder in DraftSight importieren. Das einzige, was ich konnte Import war. Dxf. Dwg von Acad. Das ist alles. Da Blender 2.5 enthält weder die dxf Exporteur ich weiß nicht, ob die Datei richtig in DraftSight importiert werden. Auch bemerkte ich, dass DraftSight viel abstürzt. wenn es beginnt und wenn Sie versuchen, etwas zu importieren. Ich habe win7 auf 64-Bit und einen anständigen PC für 3d.
It’s worth to notice that this program is freeware (free of charge) and not free/opensource software. It also requires a periodic activation.
Relying on this kind of software could be problematic in the future. Its condition of “free of charge” could change in any moment or they could just stop allowing its use for commercial applications.
LibreCad / FreeCad are better options in my oppinion.
OK, those programs don’t support DWG format, it’s true. But why it’s such a problem to ask for DXF instead when somebody has to send you files? I did that every time somebody sent me DWG and nobody complained.
Is there any special feature in DWG that isn’t available in DXF? (it’s a question. I really don’t know)
Es lohnt sich zu bemerken, dass dieses Programm Freeware (kostenlos) und nicht frei / opensource Software ist. Es erfordert auch eine periodische Aktivierung. Unter Berufung auf diese Art von Software problematisch sein könnte in der Zukunft. Sein Zustand von "kostenlos" könnte in jedem Moment zu modifizieren oder sie könnten einfach aufhören, die den Einsatz für kommerzielle Anwendungen. LibreCad / FreeCAD es bessere Möglichkeiten meiner Meinung nach. OK, diese Programme nicht unterstützt DWG-Format, es ist wahr. Aber warum es so ein Problem für DXF fragen stattdessen, wenn jemand zu Ihnen Dateien hat's? Ich wusste, dass jedes Mal, wenn jemand mich gesandt DWG und niemand beschwert. Gibt es eine Besonderheit in DWG, die nicht in DXF zur Verfügung? (Es ist eine Frage. Ich weiß wirklich nicht)
@Gez In theory any entity in a dwg file exists in dxf format too. Normally your drawing data is exactly the same between the 2 formats. Of course depending on the software developer, implementations of dwg and dxf can be a bit different, and who knows what can happen… But I agree with you, better to get used to work with dxf files, especially if you are going to work on linux.
That said, I also did some tests with DraftSight and found it quite good… Almost identical to Ares commander. And supposedly their idea is just to bring autocad users to catia (their main product), and so they have no intention to sell DraftSight… We’ll probably know quickly.

Natürlich abhängig von der Software-Entwickler, kann Implementationen von DWG-und DXF werden ein wenig anders, und wer weiß was passieren kann … Aber ich stimme Ihnen zu, besser zu verwenden, um mit DXF-Dateien arbeiten, besonders wenn du gehst unter Linux arbeiten. Das heißt, ich habe auch einige Tests mit DraftSight und fand es ganz gut … Fast identisch mit Ares Kommandant. Und angeblich ihre Idee ist einfach zu AutoCAD-Anwender von CATIA bringen (ihre Hauptprodukt), und so haben sie nicht die Absicht, DraftSight verkaufen … Wir werden wahrscheinlich schnell kennen.

I wouldn’t be happy sending out Dxfs, It requires more work, just to issue a drawing i have to pdf it and bind the cad files, i don’t want to add another process to the already annoying job of issuing drawings out, especially if i have hundreds to do. Also Dxf files can get quite large in size and a pain to email. please try and not make a cadders life any more painful than it is lol! can’t you tell i love my job,
@ Gez Ich wäre nicht glücklich Aussendung Dxfs, es erfordert mehr Arbeit, auf gerechte Ausgabe eine Zeichnung ich es pdf und binden die CAD-Dateien, ich möchte nicht an einen anderen Prozess zu den bereits lästigen Job der Ausstellung Zeichnungen hinzufügen heraus, besonders wenn ich Hunderte zu tun. Auch DXF-Dateien können ganz schön groß und ein Schmerz zu E-Mail. Bitte versuchen Sie es und nicht eine cadders Leben nicht mehr schmerzhaft, als es ist lol! kannst du nicht sagen, ich liebe meinen Job,

I just read the article about DWG in Wikipedia and now I’m more convinced that relying on Draftsight is at least a risky bet.
DWG is a good example of how proprietary formats harm innovation and smash competition.
I’d say that the lack of an open-source, full featured exchange format for CAD and not the lack of free applications that support DWG is what makes your job painful.

DWG ist ein gutes Beispiel dafür, wie proprietäre Formate Schaden Innovation und Wettbewerb zu zerschlagen. Ich würde sagen, dass der Mangel an einer Open-Source, voll ausgestattete Austauschformat für CAD-und nicht der Mangel an freien Anwendungen, die DWG macht Ihren Job schmerzhaft zu unterstützen.
